Given the connection between monks, meditation and mental discipline i think a psionic monk makes alot of sense.

Psi- Monk
Psionic Monk's believe that one can achieve enlightenment through mastery of the mind. The mind holds all the keys to mastering not only the body, but reality itself. Through deep trance meditation and breathing exercises the psionic monk can build the extreme levels of focus and discipline necessary to purge the unconscious barriers that prevent an individual from accessing the mind's true potential.
Psychic Lift
Starting at 3rd level when you use Step of the Wind you can use the power of your mind to move in any direction you choose: vertical, horizontal or diagonal. You can hold yourself aloft and continue to move in any direction until the end of your next turn whereupon if you are still in the air you fall to the ground.
Psionic Shield
At 3rd level you become surrounded with a thin shimmering shield of psionic energy. This shield has a number of hit points equal to four times your monk level. Whenever you take damage, first subtract it from the shield. If the damage reduces the shield to zero hit points and any remaining damage carries over to you. The Psionic Shield regains all its hit points after a long rest.
Psychic Flurry
At 6th level you can use your ki to channel your mind's power into your martial arts. When you hit a creature with a Flurry of Blows the damage is increased by one martial arts die of psychic damage and once on each of your turns you can choose one of the following effects:
Mind Jolt. The creature must make an Intelligence saving throw or be incapacitated until the end of your next turn. A creature immune to psychic damage is unaffected by this.
Mental Domination. The creature must make a wisdom saving throw or be under your control for its next turn.
Stunning Blast
As an action at 11th level you can concentrate the energy of your Psionic Shield into a debilitating psychic blast with a 10 foot radius centered on you. All creatures within the radius must make an intelligence saving throw against your martial arts save dc or take psychic damage equal to three martial arts die and be stunned until the end of your next turn. Creatures that make their saving throw take no damage and are not stunned. You can use this feature twice and regain the use after a long rest.
Psychic Sentinel
At 17th level your Psionic Shield expands to a 30 foot radius. When any creature within your Psionic Shield takes damage you can use your reaction to have the Psionic Shield absorb any portion of the damage you choose. Moreover, if your Psionic Shield is reduced to zero hit points it can regain all of its hit points after a short rest. The Psionic Shield can regain its hit points in this way only once per long rest.
Interesting idea. I think the Shield being 4 HP/monk level seems a bit high. Maybe 2 would be more appropriate. I mean 40 extra HP at 10th level, 80 at 20th level seems like a lot.
Mental Domination is way to OP. Dominate Person, the spell, is 5th level and not available until 9th level. This seems like a lot for a 6th level ability.

Thanks for the feedback. You are right on the mental domination. Back to the drawing board on that one or maybe move it to 17th level? My reference for 4hp per level was spore druid that gets 4 temp hp per level 2x per short rest. Open hand monk can heal 3hp per level so to keep in line with monk precedent i could maybe use that number instead.
