Icewind Dale has become trapped in a perpetual winter. Ferocious blizzards make the mountain pass through the Spine of the World exceedingly treacherous, and this land has not felt the warmth of the sun in over two years. In fact, the sun no longer appears above the mountains, not even in what should be the height of summer. In this frozen tundra, darkness and bitter cold reign as king and queen. Most dale residents blame Auril the Frostmaiden, the god of winter’s wrath. The shimmering aurora that weaves across the sky each night is said to be her doing—a potent spell that keeps the sun at bay.
Dalefolk live in a scattering of settlements known as Ten-Towns. The drop-off in caravans coming from the south and travel between settlements in this never-ending winter has left everyone feeling isolated. Although each town has resolved to appease the Frostmaiden with sacrifices of one kind or another, no respite from winter’s fury seems forthcoming. For adventurers such as yourselves, Ten-Towns is a place to test one’s mettle and, in the spirit of heroes who have come before, leave one’s mark on this frigid, blighted land.
Hello! My life has finally calmed down enough (knock on wood) that I am able to get back to running a PbP. I am searching for 4 or 5 brave souls to join me in the frigid north of the Sword Coast for my rendition of Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden.
A few things before we begin:
- This adventure is designed to start out as a mostly-open sandbox (maybe snowbox is a better description!) where the party roams Icewind Dale in pursuit of rumors and jobs which lead to adventures that foreshadow the more linear story that unfolds at higher levels. With that being said, your character should be designed to be okay with that sort of lifestyle! Whether it’s for money, glory, by divine mandate, or simply for entertainment, your character should be willing to strike out and put themselves in danger. Maybe this already goes without saying, but be adventurous! There will be room for more backstory-centric tales as the game goes on, but at least for the first few levels, be prepared for some open-ended adventuring! - As a DM, I am a sucker for characters with strong ties to the setting. It makes them much more grounded, plus gives me more to add to the story and use to motivate your character to keep adventuring. So feel free to take a look through the Rime of the Frostmaiden book or other Forgotten Realms pre-mades/sourcebooks for inspiration as you craft your PC’s identity, beliefs, and motivations. You’re on the honors system not to metagame! If you need further hooks or inspiration, here’s a table from the adventure that provides story hooks based on the vanilla 5e backgrounds:
Character Hooks Tied to Backgrounds
Background
Character Hook
Acolyte
Auril the Frostmaiden, the god of winter’s fury, has cast an evil spell over Icewind Dale. You can bring hope and faith to the people of Ten-Towns or, even better, free them from winter’s cold embrace in the name of your god.
Charlatan
Your cons and deceptions nearly got the better of you. You needed to disappear for a while, and Icewind Dale was the perfect place to do so. Nothing could prepare you for the cold and the dark desolation, but at least there’s money to be made.
Criminal
You are wanted for crimes in the cities of Luskan and Mirabar, but no one will think to look for you in Ten-Towns, the cold heart of Icewind Dale. Thankfully, nobody in Ten-Towns cares who you are—or what you’ve done.
Entertainer
You came to Icewind Dale three years ago seeking inspiration for a new song or poem, drawn by tales of the land’s harsh beauty and the legendary exploits of Drizzt Do’Urden. Since then, Auril the Frostmaiden has cast an evil spell over the dale, preventing you from returning home.
Folk Hero
Your name is synonymous with heroism throughout Ten-Towns. Did you save a fisher who fell into the ice, scare away a yeti armed with only a fishing pole and a basket, or beat a drunk goliath at arm wrestling?
Guild Artisan
You came to Icewind Dale to start a business. Your shop was doing well until Auril the Frostmaiden cast her evil spell to banish the sun. Now, businesses throughout Ten-Towns are suffering, yours included. To avoid hardship, you might need to supplement your income.
Hermit
You’ve never felt at ease in civilized society, and there’s no place farther from the trappings of civilization than Icewind Dale. This is a land without pretense, and the people of Ten-Towns pay you little mind. To them, you’re just another silly old fool.
Noble
Your wealthy grandfather or grandmother sent you to Icewind Dale to learn a hard lesson. Perhaps the cruel indifference of this frozen land will prepare you for the cruel indifference of Waterdeep’s politics.
Outlander
You’re a child of the icy wilderness, born and raised in one of the Reghed tribes. Imagine, after following herds of migrating reindeer your whole life, getting a taste of what life in Ten-Towns has to offer.
Sage
You came to Icewind Dale in search of ruins and artifacts left behind by the giants who ruled the ancient empire of Ostoria. To find even one Ostorian relic would fulfill a lifelong dream and make your rivals back home green with envy.
Sailor
You’ve sailed ships up and down the Sword Coast, but a shipwreck made you reevaluate your life choices. Two years ago, you headed north, bought a house and a fishing boat in Ten-Towns, and became a fisher. You were told that the summers here are beautiful, but you have yet to see one.
Soldier
You are a soldier of Ten-Towns, trained to fight orcs and other threats lurking in the Spine of the World mountains. Auril the Frostmaiden has cast an evil spell over Icewind Dale, and you struggle to see how your soldier’s training can save this land from so terrible a doom. Still, you are not about to give up on the people of Ten-Towns.
Urchin
Because you grew up in Ten-Towns, your familiarity with the residents makes you useful to Harper spies and Zhentarim bounty hunters who are looking for criminals and other ne’er-do-wells hiding in your midst. Ratting out these newcomers keeps coin in your pockets.
- This game has an optional secrets mechanic that I’d really like to use. Normally you’d draw cards to see what your secret is, but I think I’d like to present all the options and let people decide which ones they’d like. So rather than write an elaborate backstory detailing every event of your character’s life, keep things loose and open to fit in the details of one of these secrets! Or write that elaborate backstory, just leave room for a secret!
That being said, this is an optional rule. If you’d rather not have a secret, you don’t have to take one!
For those that do, take a look at the secrets in the Icewind Dale book or HERE. You should have at least 2 secrets chosen - one that you want as your primary, the other as your close second (or close third, fourth, fifth, etc.) in the event someone else gets that secret. Don't metagame! If you don't see a secret you like, feel free to make up your own, though it will be subject to my approval! There are some secrets that people can share, but some I’d like to keep unique. The following secrets will only be limited to one member of the party:
- This game will feature Wilderness Survival and Horror elements. If one or neither of those themes float your boat, then please do not apply.
- The following player options are restricted:
Races/Ancestries: Aarakocra, Fairy, all Spelljammer and Magic: The Gathering options, Kender from Dragonlance, plus Kalashtar, Warforged, and dragonmarked races from Eberron. Classes/Subclasses: Gunslinger Fighter Backgrounds: Any MTG, Eberron, Acquisitions Inc, or Critical Role-specific backgrounds. No Homebrew.
- We will be starting at Level 1. Generate stats using standard array or point buy and take starting equipment. Feel free to use Tasha’s optional class features and customized origins.
- Be respectful of your fellow players - racism, homophobia, sexism, and other forms of bigotry or harassment will not be tolerated!
Here’s your application format - Please PM this to me!:
Name: Race: Class: (Include what subclass you intend to go into or any multiclassing plans) Background: Backstory:(Feel free to make it as detailed or vague as you want, but be sure to include: 1) Why you are in the town of Bryn Shander in the Icewind Dale, 2) Why you are an adventurer, and 3) Leave room/be prepared to adapt for your chosen secrets, they could change the details. Maximum of 2 paragraphs, please.) Greatest Fear: Interested Secrets:(rank in order of preference, or suggest your own homebrew one - subject to my approval)
Saw someone do this on their recent recruitment thread and thought it was fun, so: Once you’ve submitted your PM to me, make a brief in-character post here about what your character would be doing if they were having fun in a warm place, far from the cold of the Icewind Dale!
I’ll leave the recruitment thread open until Friday, September 15, but I may close it early if I feel I’ve found a solid crew. Thanks everybody, can’t wait to read your submissions!
EDIT: I’ve been receiving more than a few submissions for people wanting to play Rangers. I’m trying to go for as balanced a party as possible. So to anyone who hasn’t submitted a character application yet, if you’d like to increase your chances of getting chosen, I recommend submitting a character that isn’t a Ranger. People who have already submitted Ranger characters don’t need to change them, and to those of you who still want to submit a Ranger character, feel free. Just know I’m probably only going to put one Ranger in the party.
Hi! This sounds like fun and I would like to apply! I've already sent the application. Thanks for the chance!
Regarding what the character would be doing for fun if he were far away from the Dale: he would surely be in a tavern drinking with his friends, talking and joking about whatever has transpired during the day and occasionally flirting with anyone that could have caught his eye in the process.
Hi! This sounds interesting and thank you for the chance! I've sent the application. As for what my character, Silvie, would be doing if she was having fun in a warm place, far from the cold of the Icewind Dale...
Humming a cheery tune, Silvie puts down the flowers she gathered before sitting down under a tree. This place without snow is weird, but she thinks she likes not having to wear so many clothes. The greenery and the flowers are also very nice. She picks up three flowers and looks at them and as she does, her tune becomes slower and slower until it stops entirely.
"Attempt eighteen at making a flower crown is a go. I'll manage it this time," she says to herself, then starts braiding the stems. Her humming starts again, this time a slower and more peaceful song.
Orixian rubbed his hands together to get just a kernel of warmth back in them as he headed back to town. He thought had had known cold living in Mirabar, but the Ten Towns was another level entirely. He blew into his hands, trying to get some feeling back in his fingers and silently cursing himself for forgetting gloves again. He let his mind drift back to simpler days, when he frequently trained to the point of exhaustion in the heat of the Hall of All Fires. His teacher, Hjuldrak, despite being white in the beard, had always fought Orixian to a standstill, even on the best days. Ori remembered the euphonious clang of blade on shield as they danced in the sweltering heat of the forges. He had hated it then, but Ori saw now Hjuldrak's logic: train in extreme weather and it stops bothering you when it matters. Ori smiled at the memory of his mentor and shoved his hands under his arm pits. Right now, though, he needed to find his blasted gloves.
Away from the cold, Unburdened finds a gambling place, like fighting pits or even a casino. Just there for fun as he makes bets, not really caring whether he wins or loses. Just the thrill of the game.
Far from the biting chill Calid waters her garden full of herbs and spices. She marvels at how they are growing and not frozen over solid. Calid bends down and exams a newly grafted plant in hopes it will survive. Its a graft of 2 different pepper plants and Calid hopes to make it even hotter with a delectable aftertaste that leaves your mouth numb and customers wanting more. "Come on little pepper show me you are a survivor and I'll tell you what if you grow big and strong then I will name you after my mother Flaaren" Just saying her mother's name, a fire elemental, brings a tear to her eye. "Mother I will see you again someday and that is a promise"
Sitting out on a balcony overlooking the busy streets of Baldur's Gate's Upper City, Dracor would simply close his eyes and relax. His polished gold and silver scales on his face would shimmer in the sunlight. He would close his eyes and take a sip of fine brandy from a sliver goblet before letting out a small sigh. After a moment Dracor would pick up a marble piece from his dragonchess set and gently slide it towards his opponent. "I believe that is checkmate" The dragonborn would say with a toothy grin. "don't worry, maybe next time i'll let you win."
Fun, relaxation, vacation. These are all concepts Flint is still wrapping his head around as a too comfy red velvety plush chair tried to swallow him up. He’s too hot right now, which is ironic for a fire genasi, he’s used to the bitter chill keeping him cool. As he looks around and starts to think about how he’ll get this exotic looking spicy fruit back home for the little ones to try he catches a glimpse of his friends and remembers their words, “Relax. You’ve earned this and need to recover. The others will be fine.” With those thoughts in mind Flint does his best to close his eyes and try to will himself to relax.
My little in character blurb and if I don’t hear from any of you again, good luck and happy gaming.
In a much warmer climate Pyraxus would definitely be exploring remote wilderness sites of potential historical significance. Or ticking people off in a social setting obsessing about how a discussion should happen.
I edited the main post, but want to post this here too:

Just curious will this be ran on the forums or will this be ran on discord!!!
Discord play-by-post lover. Hater of westmarches. Just gimme some character driven gameplay please.
I was thinking of running it on the forums, but if people are up for it I could run it on discord as well.
