I want to try and run a pokemon themed 5e game. I am looking for players who would be willing to also help figure out mechanics. I have been brainstorming this idea for a while and I really want to try and make this work. If you are interested PM me and we can set up a group and brainstorm together. I want to try and keep the core mechanics of 5e the same, like classes and stuff. My main idea is that it would run like a normal game but, you’d have a separate action to control your pokemon. So you could still get attacked by npc’s but, most of the time you will be doing pokemon battles. Again, haven’t really fleshed anything out yet and I am willing to take constructive criticism.
Gratz for the idea! I don't think I will participate, because I don't know enough about Pokemon and because it would probably not be my favorite kind of campaign. But this is certainly an interesting idea!
Hey I just got this brainwave today was thinking doing a dnd run of Kanto could be fun I would defo love to play Kanto Pokémon have pdfs pretty available but I’d be up for discussing and giving some ideas. Message me on here or for my discord?
I purchased the supplement "Anime 5E" on kickstarter, which includes a Pokémon themed class. To avoid copyright they didn't exactly convert Pokémon, but its a source for ideas.
As someone who grew up with pokemon, playing a D&D game based off the franchise has always been a desire of mine. I've tried a hand at it once before with family and it went ok. We used this ruleset as a guideline to our game and found this app to be extremely helpful with tracking our pokemon and using them in D&D format.
One of the issues I ran into was balancing pokemon exp, as some pokemon in the app yield wayyyy too much experience. Another was keeping players at the table invested during 1 on 1 battles. Of course, we can discuss these issues together should you include me in your party. If you've still got room, I'm down to help figure out a system and be a player in a campaign.
Like many of you, I love playing D&D. Although I tend to prefer hosting 1x1 campaigns, less scheduling conflict involved.
If you want a DM who will try his damndest to play with your characters in mind, feel free to contact me. I have too many stories circulating in my head and I want to tell them all to someone in a way they can interact with the worlds I make.
I think it would be easy enough to emulate within the rules. I'd suggest a homebrew spellcasting class (probably based on pact of the chain warlock) with summon familiar and all of the conjure spells on its spell list. Every player starts with a familiar (their "starter pokemon") and then adds to their roster by getting access to new and more powerful creatures as they level up.

This is a new and interesting way I've seen Pokemon D&D mechanics explained, but I feel like there would be a lot of nuances and confusion with this way. I think the way (most) people were thinking of was like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, where you are the Pokemon. This is how I've certainly seen it and personally played it. It would require a lot of translation from Pokemon to D&D, but for a PBP, or whatever this will be, if the DM were to work on the translations manually. I also believe there to be a ruleset that already has the translations, but I wouldn't know where to start looking for it.

I’d definitely be interested. Found a pdf a while ago that is all about playing Pokémon in 5e and I’d be happy to share it to you if you’d like.
