English is not my first language. I have been away from DnD for many years. I have not played 5e at all. I am currently inspired to try again.
edit2: I go offline at 6 pm EST. Am not online until 10 am EST. EU based.
Character creation will eventually happen. That would be discussed after I acquire a few players. It might involve point buy.
This thread will become private and stop recruiting once I have a few players.
This series of adventures will feature a small village. An undead problem. A dragon problem. A spreading evil.
And so it begins...
It is the 29th of February, 2276. At a facility in Geneva near the CERN.
Jane Doe, PhD (Quantum Computers), PhD (Quantum Engineering), PhD (Quantum AI) and her team are preparing to launch the first Multiverse Explorer Prototypes (MEP).
The lab is new, extremely expensive and has pretty much everything a scientist could desire.
It is a combined effort and several MEPs will be launched. Dr. Jane Doe leads the project, but several of the teams under her are financed by different nations.
One of the MEPs is paid for by the USA. One by the EU. One by Russia. One by China. One by a coalition of other countries. Two by major religious organizations.
The MEPs are spheres with 1m diameter and composed of trillions of self replicating Nanite robots endowed with the most advanced AI.
All systems are ready, the final count down begins, the levers are pulled and the buttons pushed. The MEPs are bombarded with a multitude of exotic particles, waves and Dr Jane Doe only knows what else. There is a bright flash, several more of them. A "whoooooooosh", a lot of "beep beep"-s and success.
The shimmering spheres of the MEPs are gone, all but one. I wont tell you which. Five of the 6 domes that were holding the MEPs are empty. The sixth looks a little sticky and discolored. According to all the computers and sensors, the five other MEPs made it. Made what exactly and where only Dr. Jane Doe knows. There is a lot of applause, cheers nad hugging. Champagne is opened and spilled and so on and so forth.
In the mean time...
You see blue. Blue above, mostly blue to the side, mostly blue down under you.
You run diagnostics. You have to because something is wrong. Likely several somethings. You can tell because while you see blue, your visual input sensors are peppered about 80% with that TV snow screen. And your audio input is almost nonexistent because of white noise. Never you mind that those things belong back in the 20th century.
Big trouble, diagnostic took almost a full second. You have lost about 99.999 % of your mass. You have 25 energy units remaining. According to the diagnostics, even with your reduces mass, that is only 25% of what you could theoretically achieve. Time sensors - you wish. They show about 101 476 years have passed. You zero that nonsense. Your AI, what has survived of it tells you to pay attention to two objects approaching and to look around.
You look around.
You are flying / floating in the air.
Under you and to the East South is an isle.
The blue around and above you is sky, but you note that it is weirdly localized, above the isle only.
The blue under you is an ocean or a sea. Also not blue further away from the isle.
Everything further away from the isle seems washed out and covered in a weird greyish mist.
Far to the South West, is perhaps a continental land mass. From that direction, a speck in the sky is approaching, through the grey mist. It looks like a small flying boat or ship. It glows in the middle with some ring of fire. (copyright is scary, so type DnD Airship in google)
From the East South, from above the isle, a big flying something is approaching. It looks to be roughly the same size as the flying ship. And your data stores, what is left of them want to call it a dragon, but of course dragons do not exist. And yet, the AI insists its a dragon. Perhaps you should shut it down ? (the AI) The dragon is white. (copyright again, you can google white dragon yourself)
But on the bright side, your audio inputs are working. You hear - well something and turn towards it. The dragon and the ship are quite close now and the dragon has decided to puke on the ship. Yup.
What you heard was the ships engine ? Well some hum or other. And the barfing sound of the dragons puke you guess. But that was a second ago, now you have something to watch instead.
The dragon spews forth some mixture of sleet and lightning right in the middle of the ship, where that ring of fire is. There are people on that ship, running on the deck, shooting crossbows? at the dragon. No help by the looks of it. The dragons breath cleaved the ship in two, right through the middle. And the dragon is veering off, big lazy turnaround and fly away. While the ship is falling down and humanoid forms are falling out of it and towards the water. There are also crates, barrels, ropes. Well lots of stuff.
What to do ? AI suggests to either:
1. Go take a closer look at the dragon so if you get home someday, you can show it exists. Will take about 10 energy units.
2. Go take a look at the ships drive, so if you get home, you can show it off. Will take about 5 energy units.
3. Go take a look at the falling people, the humane option. Will take about 5 energy units.
4. As always, come up with something else. Everyone knows AIs are stupid. <-- will not take any energy units, but it will likely take 1 one whole second because of reasons.(for reasons, looks above, search for 99.999 % something. )
edit: changed the cardinal directions so it all corresponds now to the very pretty map I found, linked in a post below.
Option 3. Take a look at the falling people while trying to figure out how to save them. Protecting people is the top of the priority list (assuming Asimov's 3 laws apply here).
No idea where this is going, but it looks interesting 😀
MEP ??? heads down and away towards the falling people. Flying is easy, what with having no mass at all and being the size of a single atom atm.
(Since you were the first, you get to pick your MEP first. I figure it would be weird to call everyone MEP, I can see how that would become a mess real fast. You can be MEP 1,2, 3 etc, or MEP US, EU, etc, or maybe MEP JSenecal. The distinction between the point of view of the MEP and the AI in it is not coincidental. Let us just say that while they were the same thing back on Earth 2276, that is no longer the case. Terms like sentience and consciousness would be discussed at some point.)
You catch up with the nearest of the falling people. (GM rolls a d% 37, then another one 84.) The person you have approached falling is not human. Humanoid - yes, human - no. AI suggests you should call it an elf. It has pointy ears. It looks like AI was full of useless data and some of it survived. Dragons and elves. The elf also looks to be dead. There seems to be a pointy part of the ships plank sticking out of its chest. Luckily, that was was quite near and you have only used 1 energy unit (EU from now on. You have 24 left.)
You realize that even if your audio input is still bad, some of the falling humanoids are screaming and head for the nearest one of those.
*GM - @JSenecal, if you like, you can roll, if not I will. a d%, twice. under 50% dead, over - alive. The other roll is under 50% human, over - non human. If you care, you can roll gender as well.
While you take that long second to examine your current newly reached humanoid, the AI chirps in. That elf you approached first was surrounded my some weird extremely exotic particle. Like we saw in the lab, you were bombarded with tons of exotic particles, practically all of them and more, back in 2076. Well, this one her takes the cake according to the AI. You are a bit cross, because it did not tell you right away, the AI says it did and you get the point. You are slow and most of you don't work at all.
ooc - Well, there is a dragon already, and there might be a dungeon later on. In my defense, I have no reached character creation yet, so I guess we will have to wait and see. ,)
edit: @Character77006, I missed your 1st post and only saw the 2nd one. I have sent you a PM about the 1st.
*OOC - GM: For my purposes, this map is either rotated 90 degrees clockwise, or on this map, the flying ship was coming form the South, while the isle was on the East. You can see the final resting position of the shipwreck on the West side of the isle on this map.
The second part of the title of this thread - Enshrouded, refers to the PC game of the same name. The grey mist is the shroud.
I hope that helps others who might be confused about if its DnD or not.
edit: The map now corresponds correctly to the story typed so far.
I love science fiction even more that D&D, so I'm happy to see where this goes 😀
Lets go with MEP 1, or if names would be better, MEP Harknail (Harknail is a warforged character I played a few times before., it is the image I use as my avatar)
She is screaming. Her skin is midnight blue, she has horns, short and swept back. She has a tail, wound around her waist as if to keep her from falling. Her eyes are wide open and they are solid orbs of gold. No visible pupils and yet you think they are fearful. She is wearing dark colors, tight and looking comfortable for movement and exercise. Straps and buckles that you notice are all muffled with cloth and they glisten, perhaps they are oiled as well. You think you see a pair of daggers on her belt. (in DnD terms, a tiefling rogue)
With insufficient mass and energy, you cannot physically stop her fall. You would have to come up with some other plan. While you do that, you keep pace with her falling.
*GM info - She does not see you - you are way too small to be visible.
*GM - if you are stuck let me know, if you want more tips as to what you can do, let me know.
AI tells you that if she continues falling like she is now, she will hit belly first in the water and from that height...well, pancake or burst water balloon ? AI asks if you would like to scan her fully, to see if her water content is similar to that of a human. You never know so far away from home.
My characters are always trying to help the downtrodden and falling from an air ship qualifies as down "something". So if allowed, I will also choose option 3 to see how many creatures I can save and then see if I an save one more. Or maybe option 4, same principal but assuming a air ship has been split and people are falling, then I can go lower then MEP 1 and collect those that MEP 1 has missed.
If that option is taken, then take option 2, try to get the drive and see what else in the name of science I can salvage and save.
*Global - beep beep beep pzzzt @MEP-Harknail, you are aware that another of the MEPs has made it. You are not alone.
@MEP 2, you have arrived somewhere. You have established connection with another MEP. You are pretty sure it is MEP 1, but the return ping says its MEP-Harknail. You cannot remember which one of you belonged to which country / faction anyways.
Never you mind all that, you have problems. Diagnostics show (see post above). You can pinpoint the location of MEP-Harknail somewhere under you. You see a burning ship falling out of the sky. Peculiar that one. People are also falling down, from the ship it looks like. There will be splashes soon. You send for more info to MEP-Harknail.
In the meantime, you fly towards ?! (Which target do you pick to fly towards ? Nearest ? Screaming? Try scanning for more info before choosing?)
(GM - Your MEP just arrived. Multiverse travel and all that being unreliable. If MEP-Harknail decides to send you the requested info, you know all that has happened in a couple of seconds. Super nanite and all. If not, you did not see the dragon attack the ship is all.)
@MEP-Harknail, do you send the info package MEP 2 requested ?
MEP 1-HARKNAIL Non-human humanoids aren't covered by the three laws. So it heads for the next source of screams to see if that one is human. While going there it asks the AI if there is any way for it to slow the fall of a person.
It's not that it thinks the life of a tiefling isn't worth saving, but due to it's programming, humans take precedence. Humans MUST be saved. If there are no humans at risk, then it may do as it pleases, as long as it doesn't cause itself to be destroyed in the process.
{Nice that you have all the MEPs built by different groups, so we can all have different programming and priorities.}
While full details are sent, the summary is:, a flying ship was broken in half by a flying dragon. The ship and it's crew are now falling. 2 non-human crew members searched, one flagged as "elf" was already dead, one unknown female still alive. MEP 1 is continuing search for humans. Also many malfunctions of the MEP.
Was interested when I first saw this, but was just as confused as well. Thanks for the small opening of understanding.
MEP РОССИЯ (Russia), comes online. Data input scarce. Diagnostic inoperable. Running subroutines, rerouting. Accessing available memory.
Россия, a throwback language, a nod to the ancient empire, the programmers got a kick out of incorporating bits like that. Maybe even Dr. Doe (До) had a hand in it, yes (Да)?
Memory accessed; Дракон-Dragon, Dragonov-programer, Dragon Space capsule-early 20th century transport vehicle. Dragon vomit-need further study.
Power consumption will be great, reward will be great, chance to achieve however will be small. Gamble high. Decision-investigate dragon.
MEP RU (РО) has made the decision to follow the dragon, accepting the 10 EU consumption to achieve. Perhaps the future can learn a thing or two from the past.
(OOC: if you hadn’t said that English wasn’t your first language, I wouldn’t have known.)
AI suggest that your best chance of finding a human is probably to go to one of the ship halves. After all, they themselves are the falling humanoid generators so to speak. They are bound to have better choice in a smaller area. But AI also reports that while it is conceivable to turn a flat belly fall into a feet first fall midair, your chances to help the people in an enclosed space with 0 mass to work with are well - 0. You can ofcourse try to zip around and hope that one of the falling people is indeed human.
@MEP 2,
(I never said you cant save lives. Your MEP just arrived.Let me know if you try a person or the ship. You just have no mass. Can always ask your AI for advice.Your AI is pretty much the GMs helping hand)
@Global,
*Global - beep beep beep pzzzt.
Another MEP has just arrived. The newly arrived MEP immediately identifies at MEP Russia, but more importantly it sends some stuff in Russian. That was not supposed to be allowed. Back on Earth 2276, Dr Jane Doe and her team, under instructions from Space Fleet Command, had to make sure no faction put their own stuff on the MEPs.
Interestingly enough, immediately after receiving the Russian segment of MEP-RU’s arrival, both MEP-Harknail and MEP 2 activate illegal software as well, each of their own faction.
Happily, all three MEPs immediately lose a second, in which some counter hack kicks in, likely installed by Dr. Jae Doe herself, and it scrubs all three MEPs illegal softwares.
All three MEPs become aware of a few things then. You know that the whole time on Earth you and the AI were the MEP. But now you realize, the AI and the MEP are the MEP, you are like - the pilot instead.Because of that, you know that Dr. Jane Doe’s hack would have been unstoppable before, but not now. Each of you can choose to let the hack delete the illegal software, or you can stop it. If you choose to stop it, you would have to look into which MEPs you are. (first come first serve i guess)
Consequences: atm, you communicate instantaneously and are always in touch. If your faction software takes over, all other MEPs will not be trusted unless specifically and on a case by case basis a command is issued.
@MEP RU,
You arrive somewhere, same description as before. Blue, blue, Isle, grey mist. You see what looks like a dragon and decide to investigate it.
@GM,
How high does an airship fly ? How long does it take a person to fall ?
The ship and people are falling. Is the rate of descent the same ?
Info: The airship was at approx 1500 ft. From that height it takes a person about 10 to 12 sec to fall.
The Airship, for whatever reason, is falling slower, broken as it is.
Timeline:
12 - MEP-Harknail examined the dead, falling human.
11 - MEP-Harknail examins the tiefling. MEP 2 arrives, MEP 2 starts towards the ship.
10 - MEP-Harknail starts looking for a human. MEP 2 arrives at the ship. MEP RU arrives, evaluates and starts after the dragon.
9 - Lost second for the counter hack scrub and software deletions.
I move toward the ship following choice: 2. Go take a look at the ships drive, so if you get home, you can show it off. Will take about 5 energy units.
I allow the hack to delete illegals. The MEP 2 is the one designed/built by a coalition of countries.
When I get to the ship, I see if anything is salvageable, in addition if there are any humanoids there, I also ask the AI how I can retrieve/save the humanoid. In addition, try to retrieve any "engine/drive" parts that look useful to have.
You reach the ship and head to the back half, because it looks like it might house more people than the nose. Each part of the ship seems to have half of the fire ring that was powering it.
Bludgeon marks on the ship suggest the sleet from the dragon breath punctured it.
There are also burnmarks, consistent with lightning on the ship's wooden planks.
You take still images and video of the ship's destroyed ring, but can't do much else, having no mass and being unable to take samples etc.
From your current position you see inside the ship, and there are people there, trying to hold on to anything and not fly off into the skies.
(you have been sent a PM, because I am not sure all MEPs are still connected. If they are I can repost for all, or if they are not, you can share with whoever you like. If you have any in-game related conversations with the other MEPs, please send me a copy so that I am aware who knows what)

MEP 2
I move toward the ship following choice: 2. Go take a look at the ships drive, so if you get home, you can show it off. Will take about 5 energy units.
I allow the hack to delete illegals. The MEP 2 is the one designed/built by a coalition of countries.
When I get to the ship, I see if anything is salvageable, in addition if there are any humanoids there, I also ask the AI how I can retrieve/save the humanoid. In addition, try to retrieve any "engine/drive" parts that look useful to have.
@MEP 2,
You reach the ship and head to the back half, because it looks like it might house more people than the nose.
