I'm hoping to find four players for Dangerous Designs, one of the short starter adventures from the newly-released Explorers' Guide to Wildemount. Characters start at 1st level and reach 3rd level as they explore the town of Hupperdook in the Dwendalian Empire. The town is a hotbed of invention and industry by day, and wild celebration by night.
I'm looking for players who are fans of Critical Role and have followed its second season. Please be able to commit to posting twice a day, including weekends, for the next couple of months.
If you're interested, please post:
Character Name: Race: Class: Background: Backstory:
(We will work together to make sure your background fits the setting, so there may be some adjustments - please post your initial thoughts here.)
And also, tell me your favourite moment from Critical Role (campaign 1 or 2) and why you like it so much. This helps give me an idea of the kind of things you enjoy about D&D.
Players who are respectful, supportive of each others' choices, and helpful and kind to fellow players and the DM are welcome. Hate speech is not. Players should be aged 18 or over.
If you prefer to message your character to me directly, that's fine. If all goes well, we can start in the next two or three days.
Character Name: Balassar Silverstone Race: Ravenite Dragonborn (silver) Class: Fighter Background: Mercenary Veteran Backstory: Balassar was born to a poor blacksmith family in Zadash. In search of helping his family out he joined the military and was stationed at the Ashguard Garrison. During this time the Garrison came under heavy attack from the Kryn. Balasaar found himself damaged and wondering from the Ashguard Garrison broken and defeated, eventually finding his way to Hupperdook where he became a mercenary for hire.
Character Name: Alton Wildcloak Race: Lightfoot Halfling Class: Bard Background: Entertainer Backstory: Alton always enjoyed a good story growing up. Whenever there was a storyteller traveling through his village he would always go and seek them out to hear what tails that had to tell. Be so fascinated with stories and the traveling storytellers, Alton decided that was what he wanted to do with his life. Traveling and telling stories that he's heard, or if lucky enough, might be a witness or even apart of. So, on his 20th birthday Alton left home with some supplies and basic equipment that was gifted to him by friends and family, promising to return one day to share all of the stories he gathered up and to share them with everyone. The first town on his stop of adventure is Hupperdook. Favorite CR Moment: Fluffernutter! Also Sprinkle getting a bath, and most of the smaller moments in CR that don't really impact the story but are just fun.

Be excellent to each other, and roll for initiative dudes!
Character Name: Dr Sal "Wash" Washburne Race: Human Variant (if allowed - using it for Healer Feat, not min-maxing) Class: Celestial Warlock Background: Custom Field Medic (or Folk Hero if preferred) Backstory: As an orphan I was conscripted as a field medic by Dwendalian military and this started my career as a healer. Even during times of "peace" there were conflicts along the borders of the empire. Early on there was fear. I feared the conflict that I would be required to dart between to try and stabilise those that had fallen. More than that though, I feared being unable to assist those that had fallen and seeing the life drain from their eyes. There was also the joy I felt when I was able to save those that had fallen. As an adult I have studied as a medical doctor with the support of a noble I once saved on the battlefield. Although much of my healing is mundane, I have often felt otherworldly celestial hands guiding mine. In the recent conflict I have discovered that whoever this being of light is that I can sense has also granted me abilities to protect myself.
If you are happy to use Heroic Chronicle, I’m happy to make some of backstory random (I really like HC).
Favourite moments: this is hard to narrow down, though memorable moments include:
Wil Wheton’s terrible rolls and how everyone dealt with them in game, the flying carpet including when it was destroyed, Scanlan’s songs, the Titan which was basically a giant walking dungeon, Taryon being quizzed on the rest of Vox-Machina’s names.
If I had to narrow down to one, it would be:
Grog’s reaction when Scanlan died (the "fix him" scenes) - heart-wrenching, but excellent RPing.
Character Name: Ashwynwell "Ash" Spenstar Race: Pallid Elf Class: Ranger Background: Folk Hero - full disclosure, I've been binging Psych and I modeled this character off Shawn Spencer. Any background can help, but I went with Folk Hero because of the extra language and tool skill. But if there's another background you think works, I'm all for it. Backstory: Ash was an only child born to Sergerant Laciee Spenstar while his father ran out on the family at a young age. Laciee would play games with Ash that tested his perception and memorization. While his mother wanted him to be an officer like her, but Ash had other plans. His curiosity and attitude led him to hold many short-term jobs and get into trouble. His love for the road led him to become a ranger and he traveled the lands, offering his services as an investigator. While he has a moral code, he's not picky about his cases.
Favorite CR moment: The battle against Umbrasyl. It was a dragon fight, but it wasn't your typical battle. Grog took her down with his chains and Scanlan and Vax were fighting from within. It also came off the heels of Grog killing Kevdak. I love Campaign 2 and the one-shots, but Grog is my favorite character in Critical Role because the way Travis played him was the first time I saw that having a low stat isn't a bad thing.

I have an intelligence of six, I know what I'm doing.
Character Name: Rocky Race: Firbolg (maybe Goliath) just want to have a giant mixed in with all the gnomes. Class: Cleric Background: Acolyte Backstory: The old tale of the young priest of a small clan sets out on a pilgrimage to see the world before returning home to help his people. Favorite moment: Campaign one, really is the lingering problem of Raishan. The spying, scrying, tense truce, chase and fight right after Thordak - having half the team drop (which sets up to Scanlans bombshell later) then the final battle for Keyleth to get Feeblemind to stick. So many dramatic moments stem from that one character *chef kissing fingers noise*. Also.... Larkin!? Campaign 2 besides the infamous cupcake and decahedron showings.... I think the Fight with Avantica and the pirate ship fight. But really when I think Fjord and Molly tried to distract the people in the hospital and it went tits up was great too.
Character Name: Calasseus Carrow Race: Half-Elf Class: Monk Background: Hermit Backstory: Cala was born of the forbidden romance between a high ranking leader of an underground gang that actively opposed the Empire, and a loyal Crownsgaurd. They tried to keep her hidden, but it soon became clear that the tensions between their two groups were growing too high, and that if found, Cala would be the perfect bargaining tool. Fearing for their daughter's life, two year old Cala was sent to a monastery on the Menagerie Coast where she was trained by the monks. Calasseus knew very little of her past growing up, and was rarly allowed to leave the monastery, so she buried herself in her martial training and any book she could find. A month ago she received notice from the Crownsgaurd of her father's passing, and as she is his only known kin, she was told to come and collect his things.
Favourite CR moments:
"I killed my whole family, I'll throw you under a bridge. I'm learning how to people"
Character Name: Malfearance Race: Human (variant) Class: Druid (Circle of spores) Background: Haunted One (and Hollow from EGtW) Backstory: The tall, gaunt, elderly man known as Maelfearance mostly haunts the streets of town during the nighttime hours, not interacting overly much with most. People are put off by the fact that the man wears shackles and a tattered robe and has a habit of having side conversations with. so he claims, the ghosts of those long past.
For his part, Maelfearance has little use for the living, seemingly satisfied with the squalid life he lives and the company of spirits and ghosts. The odd occasion when he does yearn for a bite to eat or a drink of ale, Maelfearance has a habit of sharing a juicy bit of information with just the right person to earn a gold piece or two... Information nobody could possibly know, but spirits.
When he is engaged in conversation, Maelfearance proves to be intelligent and, on occasion, even charming. But the fact that he believes he can talk to the dead, that he yearns to one day gain the power to raise the dead, specifically his long dead wife, is enough for most people to keep such conversations short...
(I kind of aim to play him not in typical Druid fashion but more as a "magic user" studying the difference between life / death / undeath with the ultimate goal of resurrecting his long dead wife and making them both immortal... He's not crazy wackadoo crazy, but he does talk to his dead wife as if her spirit is with him, and takes advice from her. Is the spirit really talking to him, who knows?)
I could post at least once a day, usually two or three as needed, if the thread is moving that quick.
Favorite CR moment:
Honestly I only found CR a month or two ago but I am up to episode 56 in campaign 1 already! Love the show, love the interaction between the players and how they all work to help each others storylines no matter who has the spotlight at the time...
Thanks to everyone who's posted so far. I'm going to close this in about three hours, so if there are any final submissions, please get them in. I'll try to contact the selected players shortly after.
I've DMed the four players. If you haven't received a DM, then I'm afraid I decided to go with other players for this time. Thanks to everyone who was interested in joining, and I hope to have a chance to play with everyone in the future. Good luck in finding a game - there are several starting every week, and lots of great DMs on this site. :)
Yo, i don't know if you ran Dangerous designs, but i'm reading through it and i find a part of it confusing, like i cant really picture what it describes.
On page 226, it describes the heroes being at the Peak of Silver Falls A paragraph reads that with the info gathered at the apothecary's house, they find the secret entrance (so im guessing they dont if they dont have the info, for now im good)
Then at Fool's Entrance is where i lose it. The characters are already supposed to be at the peak of the waterfall, and then it says that with a perception success they spot a chimney above the waterfall. if you at the top, wouldn't you see a chimney sticking out of flat ground? ????? "The chimney rises from the ground" so im guessing it sticks out of the ground like small tent pole. "The chimney is too smooth to be climbed except with rope anchored to the rocks above" What rocks above? when you're at the top of a waterfall, isn't it just flat, like a stream is flowing.
Hi, my party hasn't reached that point yet. But I've had a look through the adventure guide. My interpretation is that the adventurers have reached the top of the waterfall, but that's not the top of the mountain. So they can continue to climb further up the mountain if they want, in which case they will look down (presumably in a slightly different direction than back to the falls) and notice the chimney. If the chimney is on the same level as the waterfall, but not in the same place, it would make sense that they can see the smoke from below but have to climb a bit higher to see the chimney clearly.
