It winds with a troubling, serpent-like suggestion through the corrupted countryside, leading only, I fear, to ever more tenebrous places. There is a sickness in the ancient, pitted cobbles of the Old Road, and on its writhing path, you'll face viciousness, violence and perhaps, other damnably transcendent terrors.
So, steel yourself, and remember, there can be no bravery without madness. The old road will take you to hell, but, in that gaping abyss, we will find our redemption.

Hello all! I’m been brewing up a fun idea recently. I'd like to run a West Marches campaign here on D&D Beyond, with a cosmic horror theme. Adventure into the wilderness and face off against monsters vile beyond human comprehension!
Taking inspiration from the RPG horror video game Darkest Dungeon, I’ve created the world of Alycron as the setting of this campaign. But first, what is a West Marches game, and how is it different from a regular D&D campaign? Well, It’s sandbox-style game, without a regular plot or even a regular group of players.
Here are the defining elements of a West Marches campaign:
All player characters begin in a “safe” starting town, surrounded by dangerous wilderness.
Players discuss with each other and form a party of 3-5 from a larger pool of players.
The party tells the DM where they want to travel to on the map and what they want to do. The DM prepares an adventure for them. They venture into the wilderness, complete their adventure, and return to town.
Other elements:
Players share what happened in their adventures with others who weren’t there. As their characters spend their downtime in the same town, it's assumed word gets around about their deeds. Players are encouraged to write an adventure report in the designated forum.
The campaign takes place in a shared world map, which is may be unreliable. An initial map will be provided to the players, but then it is up to them to mark down dungeons, terrain, threats, and points of interest. As more parties go out into the wilderness and come back, the map will become more detailed.
There may be an element of competition. Bob's party may have been forced to retreat from the ruins, but your party could go there and clear it out!
Content is loosely tiered. Players begin at a lower level, but as they gain experience, treasure, and magic items, they can travel farther from town- encountering deadlier foes and more opportunity for treasure.
There will have to be some adaptions made due to the PbP Format. I’ve never tried out anything like this before, so I’m excited to see how it works! Depending on the amount of players, we may need more DMs to join on to run more adventures.
Here's a sneak peek of the initial world map(unfinished):
Post down below if you are interested in either being a player or a DM. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. If this garners enough interest, I'd like to get a recruitment thread up this weekend or the next. Cheers!

Hi RazorDawn! I’ve never tried a campaign like this but would be interested in giving it a go as a player. Will ponder some character ideas for a PC appropriately motivated for such random adventures and look for your recruitment and specifics on character creation. Thanks
This sounds really interesting. I'll throw in my fearless (and unwise) warlock for this. I haven't been able to get into any pbp games lately, because every time, without fail, my application is passed up. :(
Hey! Would love to play in this setting. Never done anything like a West Marches campaign before, and it sounds fun. I think my Triton Barbarian with a hatred for Warlocks would be a good fit.
When you say lower level, do you mean first level? I have Khaldon currently set to 3rd, but can change it no problem.

Details have not been ironed out yet, so it's up to discussion. I'm thinking about having players start out at third or maybe second level.

On mobile, otherwise I would have just edited the above post. I’d probably start out as a player, but would probably be willing/able to DM later on if it becomes needed and of interest.
This sounds like it could be very interesting and could grow to be very dynamic. I like the sandbox world exploring/contribution concept. I'd toss my name in the hat :)

Hello! I've been missing playing something fierce and this seems like a really cool idea! I would love to be a player in something like this.
Zevrana - Moon Elf/Rogue - Arcane Trickster/L5

I recommend the third level
Usually a good bet. Second level would be if people aren't decided about their subclass or want more room for growth.

This is definitely a cool idea, I'd love to be part of it. I could fill whatever role you need me to, character or DM, I'm fine with either.

I'd love to see where this goes as a player!
I'd definitely join this sort of game as a player.
I've never tried PbP before, but I'd be interested in trying out.
