A caravan carrying essential materials for a divine ritual that aims to help the people of Bryn Shander stave off the brunt of the Rime of the Frostmaiden attempts to make it through the treacherous passes along the Spine of the World. However, suspicions fall upon the caravan members as some suspect it has been infiltrated by the Cult of Auril itself, threatening the ritual and the brave travelers that try to reach Ten-Towns with crucial supplies.
Edit: I may not have made this clear, but this requires NO previous Adventurers League experience. Just come up with a Level 1 character if you're interested in an one-shot adventure set in Icewind Dale. :)
This is part of the Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden in the Plague of Ancients adventure series, using the Adventurers League rules, run via Play-by-Post here in the Forums. This is a 4-hour adventure converted for play-by-post format, which will probably stretch over some weeks. In the event of continuing with the series or other adventures, I'll recruit again and consider preference to former players.
Application Info: Please post below your character Name, Class, Level, Background, a short character Introduction (appearance, short backstory, whatever you want), Link to character sheet, also roll a Secret for them (d20, knowing that I've scrambled the list). If your character is higher than Level 1, also include their adventuring Log (ignore if you don't know what this is).
If you're making a character for this, in order for it to be AL-legal, your main concerns are to keep its options restrained to Player's Handbook +1, not using Eberron, Theros, Ravnica or Wildemount, using either Standard Array or Point-Buy for ability scores, and to choose among the available races: Player's Handbook races, Aasimar, Firbolg, Goliath, Kenku, Kobold, Orc, Tabaxi, Deep Gnome, Duergar, Eladrin, Gith, Shadar-kai, and Tiefling subraces from MToF (not SCAG, unfortunately). Otherwise, check your options here: https://media.wizards.com/2020/dnd/downloads/AL_PGv10_3.pdf
The adventure is meant for 3 to 7 Adventurers League legal characters of levels 1 to 4 (Tier 1) that will be all recruited in this thread, not in a first-come-first-serve manner.
If unsure what all of this Adventurers League thing really means, visit: https://dnd.wizards.com/ddal_general If you have any other doubts, feel free to ask below. :)
Introduction: Antoine is a friendly gnome who ferries supplies to the north, frequently using his boat, the Faraway Dreamer. He's friendly, likes to chat with others. He usually docks the boat farther away from Ten-Towns and pays others to actually bring the supplies there, but sometimes he'll go to the town itself if he feels like it.

Introduction: Vanys was used to the cold being from the High Ice. But it was different in the West. He frowned whenever he thought about it. Regardless, he wasn't getting anywhere at Castle Hartwick, and his investigations at Ascore were proving futile, so he knew that he had to come West eventually. Icewind Dale and the Ten Towns was the nearest place where he figured he could find some business, and he was willing to deal with the cold, so that's where he went. Approaching the towns, he finally put some spring in his step excited for a proposition that might not be riddled with dead ends and perhaps even a chance to make some coin.

“The mark of a successful DM is when you have caused more player deaths with doors than dragons, demons, or devils.”
Backstory: I don't know where I was born. As a young child I was sold into a wondering circus. Life there wasn't bad. I wasn't abused, much. It also afforded me the time to observe and learn the skills of archery. Over time I became a center attraction using my archery skills while mounted, blindfolded, even upside down to entertain the masses that came to our show. When the circus master retired we all went our separate ways and I spent many years wondering taking random jobs. I found a love for exploring new places and recusing maidens in distress, as well as slaying the odd monster.
But clarifying point for me, as I am new to 5E and have not dipped into AL. is this restritect to only registered AL players? Or is it just using those rules? I infact have an interest in AL; but no groups in my area currently-what with everything. Edit for clarification: Oh, I think you aren't requiring it but if i'm trying to get into AL stuff anyway it would be neat to start out here)
I'll go read those links for now~ But I'll also note some things below Red. Artificer (Alchemist), Folk Hero. Link to sheet once I know more about how building for AL works in terms of starting gear. Link to sheet; still have item management to finish. Also AL doesn't seem to restrict race to P+1; so took the chance to play with that custom lineage deal (I was incorrect) Story
Red wasn't the nicest kid in the village, had some self centered issues. These stemmed from feeling that he was the most clever in the village. His confidence was shattered when some shadow creatures from the local mountain-that was labeled as cursed took note of him; the foolish child thinking he could find something cool in the area. They did not hurt him; yet, they started hunting him. Daily, never attacking, alway scattering around others, but always there-at the edge of his sight. It wore on him for several months. Whenever he was out at night alone they would chase. One night he was caught out after sunset-He was trying to make it home when he saw others being chased by a similar creature. In his attempt to help they all crashed on a bridge. But Red had finally snapped; alone he was terrorfied but now these others were being hunted. He tried to fight back with a bit of wood. It didn't go well. yet, a dapper gentleman walked up from the otherside of the bridge and easily dispatched the creatures. Telling the three that they were marked and they might or will someday come back. However, he was willing to train them. The other two found their skillsets; one in magic, the other in weapons. Red however, was fairly lousy at them all; but he was clever and learned to use tools to get around it. Creating his own style using Alchemy and Enchantments to fight. He was not strong, but he could do it. On their "graduation day" their teacher gifted them things; Red recieved a ring, the ring his master always wore. One of the others had no taste for violence but needed to learn to defend himself; he however went back to farming. The girl opted to return to her job in the city. Red however, decided he was better now than he was before, and that he did not want to forget the feeling he had before-of wanting to protect. He decided to be like his teacher and travel to help out, explore and life well. See the world.
Red is entirely fluffed as alchemy items or etched pre-enchanted items. He has no magic he wields and only has his tools he's made.
Red is a male. He's thinner than his abilities would imply. he has long red hair tied with a ribbon-band with metal on it. His armour looks somewhat cobbled together, perhaps put together by scraps of others-or perhaps purposefully damaged in order increase mobility. His gear is featured in many different holders, pockets and the like. As well as a short broken sword that he uses, holdding emotional value to him.
Red is chaotic good, through his experiences he's learned to help and think of others more than in his youth. He feels good about it, but he's still not much for rules unless they serve a tangible purpose. He also enjoys cooking-seeing it much like alchemy or enchanting, a set recipe that allows for personal flare to make it your own.
Class: Wizard (Will be Abjuration wizard in future)
Level: 1
Background: sage
Backstory:
Born as a child of fire elemental, somehow Flame always ended up cold or wet or both. This time he took a job as a ship wizard. It seemed an easy and good job ……at first. But surprise! The honest merchant who employed Flame was a pirates captain! The whole crew of the ship is criminals! And they are terrible ones. Instead of rich merchant ship, they run straight into a giant storm! Flame barely got in the escape boat thanks for his charm and Sleep spell. Now being washed up on the coast of Icewind Dale, Flame is wet and cold with an octopus crawling on his face but no money. Again no money! He must find something to turn the tide and escape from this bad luck.

Introduction: Tragedy is a charming, slick-talking, confident bard. Raised by a pair of traveling entertainers/con artists, she has learned the art of being an entertainer and songwriter, as well as how to help herself to extra tips. She can be selfish and seeks to serve herself over others, but can nevertheless be a great support if you earn her loyalty.
Notes: Please let me know if I succeeded in making an AL-legal character since I haven't done AL before! Also, I wouldn't mind making the character a tabaxi, or more clearly good-aligned, if that would suit better. I just couldn't find tabaxi as an option when making the character. I'd prefer to expand on the backstory when I know more about the adventure and what that secret will be :)
Zwordsman: No registration needed to play AL, you're good! :) Noticed you're using custom lineage, which is not allowed in AL (customizing your origin is OK, though!), so you might want to change that.
Apophis2000: Unsure what you meant to change as Level 2. If you have played an AL adventure before with this character and want to use the Level 2 version of it, it's OK, I only have to see the log. If you meant to change the character that is already at Level 2, AL allows for the whole character to be rebuilt freely prior to you playing their first adventure at Level 5. Edit: Noticed you've picked Fire Genasi, which unfortunately isn't in the list for the Seasonal version of AL (Historic is OK, but this adventure isn't in the Historic season, yeah, go figure why WotC came up with these recent rules...) :/
Firexx: You can go Tabaxi and track the sheet somewhere else if you don't have them here in DDB (I don't either), it's OK. 👍
We have enough applications, so I'll close them off now. Thanks to everyone who applied, I''ll message the chosen group today, trying to fit in as many of you as possible.
Thank you for your interest! Look forward for other one-shots in this fashion in there future. :)

Hi I have made a new character. Please check her for me.
Name: Mialee Raethran
Race: Wood-Elf
Class: Druid
Level: 1
Background: Acolyte
Introduction:
Mialee, also known as Mia among her friends, was always a precious jewel in her parents eyes. They raised her in a secret woods and protected her from the corrupted and dangerous world. But Mia felt unfulfilled. Part of her knew that her true destiny was waiting at the outside of the little paradise parents made for her. One day when Mia meditated in the garden, she saw a vision of a magnificent oak tree. Tall as mountains, kind like mother, more beautiful than anything Mia had ever seen. It's branches covered the sky and protected the lives beneath it from the harsh cold of the North. And Mia also saw the ominous and freezing cloud was rising from the horizon and determined to destroy the great tree. That night Mia kissed her parents and left her home. She was sad but not afraid. Because nature, the great mother herself is guiding her.
As a random lil note, in case I get chosen. I' am debating the feat a bit. I'm pondering picking up the shield Master feat. I've never gotten to try that out but been thinking about it, realize this might be a good situation for it.
Hello, everyone! Since we've had a number of applications that fits neatly into two groups, I'll go ahead and do just so:
GROUP 1 BlueBayou playing Mihris, the Tiefling Cleric Apophis2000 playing Mialee Raethran, the Wood Elf Druid The_Mathemagician playing Vanys Darkblood, the Half-Elf Sorcerer Zwordsman playing Red, the Human Artificer
GROUP 2 Cyrasil playing Saeni Tealeaf, the Halfling Warlock Firexx, playing Tragedy Whispers, the Tiefling Bard goatthegreat playing Antoine Happlestapple, the Rock Gnome Paladin AndrewFairall playing Rael Brimstone, the Tiefling Fighter
Secrets below. Remember that secrets may or may not come into play during this specific adventure, but will certainly come into play if you run through the Rime of the Frostmaiden hardcover. If you look at any other than your own, curses upon you! :)
Mihris
Midwinter Child. Auril the Frostmaiden has blessed me, for I was born on the Midwinter holiday. I have resistance to cold damage.
Mialee
Owlbear Whisperer. Owlbears are predisposed to like me. If I am within 10 feet of an owlbear, I can use an action to make a DC 10 Charisma (Animal Handling) check. On a success, I change the owlbear's attitude toward me from hostile to indifferent or from indifferent to friendly.
Vanys Darkblood
Escaped Prisoner. I was brought here from another world by spacefaring mind flayers. The ship in which I was imprisoned crashed in the mountains south of Ten-Towns. After surviving the crash, I nearly froze to death crossing the tundra to reach Ten-Towns. If some friendly trappers hadn't found me, I would have perished. I fear some of my captors also survived the crash and might come looking for me.
((Since this doesn't thoroughly fit your backstory, let's say you've witnessed the ship falling through the skies and crashing against the Spine of the World mountains as you made your journey from the high ice. And you've been having otherworldly visions and nightmares ever since.))
Red
Alagondar Scion. I'm a scion of the Alagondar bloodline and the only known heir to the crown of Neverwinter. If Dagult Neverember, the city's lord-regent, learns that I'm alive, he'll send assassins to kill me.
((No one said secrets are particularly good xD ))
Saeni Tealeaf
Spy. I'm a spy for the Harpers, a secretive organization that works behind the scenes to thwart tyrants and other evildoers. My mission in Icewind Dale is to safeguard the settlements of Ten-Towns while concealing my Harper affiliation. Credible threats to Ten-Towns include the Arcane Brotherhood, an organization of wizards based in Luskan, and the Zhentarim, an expansive shadow network that wants to control trade throughout the North. Both have threatened Ten-Towns in the past. My only Harper contact in Ten-Towns is a human named Beldora, who poses as a homeless woman and spends her days gathering information in Bryn Shander.
((But you already knew that :) ))
Tragedy Whispers
Doppelganger. I'm a shapechanger. I have none of the traits of the race I'm imitating, but I retain my class features, background, and alignment. I have darkvision out to a range of 60 feet. I can use an action to do either of the following at will:
- I can innately cast detect thoughts, requiring no components. My spellcasting ability is Intelligence. The spell's Wisdom save DC is 8 + my proficiency bonus + my Intelligence modifier. - I can polymorph into any humanoid I have seen or back into my true form. My statistics, other than my size, don't change. Any equipment I'm wearing or carrying isn't transformed. I revert to my true form when I die.
((I laughed when this came up, since you were the one still deciding on race xD ))
Antoine Happlestapple
Pirate Cannibal. I served aboard Dark Duchess, a pirate ship from the city of Luskan. After the vessel got stuck in the ice, everyone but the captain abandoned the vessel and fled to Ten-Towns. We got lost in a blizzard along the way. I was the only one who made it, and only by eating my mates. The ship and its treasure are still out there.
((I'm gonna say the part about eating your mates is optional, and that you may or may not have been in the Dark Duchess, or witnessed all of that from your own ship, the Faraway Dreamer. Btw, is that a reference to Chrono Trigger? xD ))
Rael Brimstone
Runaway Author. I penned a notorious exposé called "The Hellbent Highborn," which accused several prominent patriars in Baldur's Gate and nobles in Waterdeep of being devil worshipers. Although my accusations were well founded, I made a lot of enemies and was forced to seek refuge in Icewind Dale.
((Curiously, I have a nephew named Rael))
Thank you all for your applications! I shall make the group threads soon.
Dang... Lot's of spell power in our group... 3 full casters, 3 ritual casters, 1 natural caster, 1 divine caster, 2 arcane casters... Although the lack of an obvious frontliner might be an issue for us... Looking forward to this!

“The mark of a successful DM is when you have caused more player deaths with doors than dragons, demons, or devils.”
For group 1, looks like i'm probably the most durable. though only cantrip or knife~
Would the GM be fine if I switched out my Light cantrip? I forgot that my Artificer's Magical Tinkering can make almost as good light with my ball bearings.
I joined and I"ll make my sheet look all pretty + picture today
Thank you for the invite!
Group 1:
BlueBayou playing Mihris, the Tiefling Cleric Apophis2000 playing Mialee Raethran, the Wood Elf Druid The_Mathemagician playing Vanys Darkblood, the Half-Elf Sorcerer Zwordsman playing Red, the Human Artificer
Curious what ARtificer counts as theere? Or do those groups overlap? Arcane Ritual caster?
although decently durable; but i can't switch between weapon and casting very easily due to the specific spellfocus Artificers require. Though I can still kick folks if I am in casting mode~ (Juggling Dagger and Alchemist Supplies~)
There is definitely overlap... and I think we should end up fine... With Strength of the Grave... I can take a few hits and honestly, we should be able to take most things out before they get to us.

BlueBayou playing Mihris, the Tiefling Cleric
Apophis2000 playing Mialee Raethran, the Wood Elf Druid
The_Mathemagician playing Vanys Darkblood, the Half-Elf Sorcerer
Zwordsman playing Red, the Human Artificer
GROUP 2
Cyrasil playing Saeni Tealeaf, the Halfling Warlock
Firexx, playing Tragedy Whispers, the Tiefling Bard
goatthegreat playing Antoine Happlestapple, the Rock Gnome Paladin
AndrewFairall playing Rael Brimstone, the Tiefling Fighter

Wow, two tieflings and two short folks.
This will be interesting...
Will we be putting the characters in campaign groups?
We can do it for ease of reference, character sheet access, and information, etc. Same one for both groups: https://ddb.ac/campaigns/join/17248214098726715

Dang... Lot's of spell power in our group... 3 full casters, 3 ritual casters, 1 natural caster, 1 divine caster, 2 arcane casters... Although the lack of an obvious frontliner might be an issue for us... Looking forward to this!

Neat o keen.
Group 1:
BlueBayou playing Mihris, the Tiefling Cleric
Apophis2000 playing Mialee Raethran, the Wood Elf Druid
The_Mathemagician playing Vanys Darkblood, the Half-Elf Sorcerer
Zwordsman playing Red, the Human Artificer
Curious what ARtificer counts as theere? Or do those groups overlap?
Arcane Ritual caster?
although decently durable; but i can't switch between weapon and casting very easily due to the specific spellfocus Artificers require. Though I can still kick folks if I am in casting mode~
(Juggling Dagger and Alchemist Supplies~)
There is definitely overlap... and I think we should end up fine... With Strength of the Grave... I can take a few hits and honestly, we should be able to take most things out before they get to us.

Fun times~
Well. Red's a Gap Fill, so he can switch around as needed, and as item interactions allot. Fun times
