I've always found the Ranger a cool class, and the Beastmaster subclass seemed like a cool twist on the idea of a Ranger. However after some daydreaming on a random Tuesday evening, I wondered if the Beastmaster should become it's own class in a future instalment of DND. It seems ripe for some cool lore that Wizards of the Coast could easily add. I think that it could also have some cool subclasses (that could be based off what kind of beast you have as a buddy for example) that wouldn't be available if it was stuck being a ranger subclass. But this is all just some idea. What do yall think?
Its a Possible route for good design as it would allow better balance and less fear of breaking the game via companions.
However I don't think it's good for dnd design. Dnd is a mix of mechanics and theme. They would rather each class flavor it's pet option to the framework of a class. This makes sense with artificers, Warlocks etc.... Each style of minon management is/will continue to be designed for harmony with a core heroes mechanic framework and tone.

Ah I see, since there isn't necessarily a framework for the Beastmaster character itself, it's easier to take a class with an established role, and mechanics, and add a pet as a cool little gimmick in a subclass. To be fair this makes sense since adding a pet simply adds another dimension to an already very establishing and lore-rich class.
I think that it would be very cool if Wizards of the Coast did go through the effort of making this it's own separate class however. I don't think the idea is quite reaching it's full potential
