So my current obsession is my new Lizardfolk Ranger. I was playing with the idea of his being a draconic bloodline sorcerer (Bronze), whose bloodline only awakens when his squirrel dies (Wholesomeness to the max, deal with it) He's only a level 2 ranger right now, and I won't be able to multi until he has 8 ranger levels under his belt, because ASI's. I wanted to do full Beast Master Ranger with 3 levels in Sorcerer, but I have concerns about balancing that out. The character concept is amazing and I'm still doing it, but I'm not entirely sure what spells I need to pick or if I should pick a different Ranger subclass.
Edit: My DM plans on using through homebrew of level cap 40, so eventually I'll be 20 in both classes. But in the meantime, I'm not so sure how to balance it, or at what pace I need to be levelling.
Don't take Beast master of you want the squirrel to die. Just ask the DM to have it as a companion. I have nothing against beast masters, just taking the subclass just to have the beast die is a bit weird. You could take hunter, or just have your beast die really quickly, then take something else, like the beast of land if UA is allowed. That would be a good idea. Otherwise, I like the concept.

I mean, my Beast Master part is for my giant Badger named Julian Wimbledon. And for the other benefits. I actually unironically like the class, though Hunter is technically better.
I am making a ranger / sorcerer also. His race is the new bugbear from MotM. He is also going heavy into ranger as hunter ranger though down to get volley. And 9 lvls in divine soul sorcerer to reach holy weapon. The downside is I won’t get volley and holy weapon til lvl 20, but getting an extra 2d8 damage to every target hit by volley will be pure gold.
His story goes way back to his mother who was part of a well known adventure group named”guiltless” . The red wizards of Thay had teamed up with yuan-ti and the god Zehir . Zehir wants to finish the job he started way back when in taking over the entire dragon domain. To this end the Red wizards of Thay have been promised the power of dragons for there role in sucking the life essence of every dragon in existence, and the yuan-to would serve as foot soldiers for them. Zehir wants to remake the dragon domain in his image. Because of this Tiamat, Bruhamut , and Saridor have made a temporary alliance to work together to end this threat to all of dragon kind. They enlisted the aid of some of the more mundane races to help them in exchange for each person in the band that succeeded to end this threat a gift from each of the 3 dragon gods. Nora the characters mom was barren and Tiamat knew this so her gift was give her a child through immaculate conception. The child was forming with a bit of Nora’s dna, and Tiamat’s dragon magic to fill in the gaps. What Tiamat wasn’t telling her was the child was corrupted by her magic and was intended to be her champion in the future. She kept her promise at the same time working towards her agenda. Bruhamat was not fooled though, and his gift to Nora was adding in his own magic to counter Tiamats magical influences upon the child. Sardior not being as strong as the other two dragon gods offered the child his wisdom and future guidance. He would visit the child from time to time and mentor him.. As he is the god if the neutral gem dragons neither Tiamat nor Bruhamat would protest this.
I then added physical traits to reflect the 3 different dragon dieties within him. From Tiamat he gain 1 blue eye and 1 green eye to represent Tiamats multiple heads. From Bruhamat his hair was platinum blonde, and from sardior his skin reflected light as if reflected by a prism. He was originally created first by Tiamat so his bonus spell for divine soul is inflict wounds, but he is chaotic neutral. I was going to go with lawful neutral since all the dragon gods are lawful, but having the war within him between evil influence of Tiamat’s magic and good influence from Bruhamat’s magic raging for dominance makes me think more chaotic then lawful.
what is good about this build is you keep volley as attack for action phase, and either can say quicken cast a spell like fireball as the bonus action, or if getting lower on slots / sorcery points the call up a spiritual weapon as the bonus attack. This build will hit lvl 8 spell slots, so you could use it to get spiritual weapon to 4d8+ mod in force damage. It also gains ranger spell list to lvl 3 spells , and sorcerer / cleric list to lvl 5 spells. But I would do first lvl as sorcerer then ranger til at least lvl6 for extra attack, then sorcerer til 10 to pickup lvl3 spells from its lists ( fireball ) and will have extended / quicken spell by then and spiritual weapon spell. Then finish out ranger for volley at lvl 16. By then you have fireball and volley, and this is where the build starts to go insane. Finish lvls as sorcerer to get holy weapon spell at lvl 5 spells at lvl 20. It is built to saturate an area in aoe damage, but it also is nice it never really has to choose between martial ( ranged) damage and caster damage, it’s both. If you go off of Tasha’s cauldron rules ranger can use a Druid focus as a ranger focus. So I combined both the sorcerer and ranger ( Druid) focus into a ring. The ring is a simple Yew would ring that has been polished, and has a ruby crystal set in it as it’s gemstone. The ruby crystal is the focus for the sorcerer spells, and the made out of yew wood is the ranger spell focus. Since 1 hand is always free for casting spells and could be wearing the ring since longbows and heavy crossbows only need two hands to use, not to hold.
3rd level sorcerer gives some interesting options if you get share spells (mirror image for one). But the possibility of any sorcerer spell scroll is worth considering if you can manage the check.
There's some interesting meta magic options too.
Your spells kind of depend on if you are playing tasha's (Probably easier in this senario) or phb. Your fighting style and preferd equipment also changes what you take.
Zephyr strike is usually decent, goodberies never hurt. Absorb elements becomes a defensive must at higher levels. Pass without a trace is amazing. Hunter's mark can be good under the right setups.(especially once you get share spells.) But don't over rely on it. Summon spells are nice and should not be under valued
