So Im playing a barbarian 2, rogue 2 (planning to go rogue 18 from here). Started from level 1.
14 Strenght 16 Dex 16 Con 8 Int 10 Wis 11 Char, Satyr
I've been curious to see how a dex focused build making use of the barb abilities from the first 2 levels would do. Especially using Reckless attack to gain advantage for sneak attack, and how tanky the build could get unarmored defense, a shield, and better HP than a normal rogue. I thought I'd share the experience so far.
And so far, its working even better than I thought. Although Reckless attack requires I use strength to attack, I've rarely missed thanks to the advantage it gives. Something I hadn't thought of before playing is how well this works with throwing daggers, and before I got sneak attack, javelins. I've never had a round where I just wasn't in range for some kind of attack.
Rage has been a nice occassional ability, but not all that much to speak of yet. The 18 AC means that I usually come out of combat with much less damage than the pure barbarian in the party, at least at these lower levels. And so many attacks miss my character that its very easy to lose rage if I don't land my attack.
Im thinking about going arcane trickster to grab the shield spell and other defensive spells in addition to all the fey shenanigans the charms and illusions can be worth outside of combat. Really lean into mischievous sort of Fey Knight archetype. Im also tempted to grab Booming blade and get War Caster for my first feat too, for a Sentinel like effect to keep enemies from running past me.
I'll see if I can keep getting away with such a low strength score for reckless attack into the higher levels, or if the build starts to fall off.
I've got a character doing the inverse multiclass -- four levels of swashbuckler rogue, the rest in zealot barb (at least so far, will probably do a fighter dip to get Action Surge) -- and it's been a total blast. Absolute battlefield freedom. Attack somebody with Reckless, move away far enough that they can't reciprocate. Caster hiding behind a wall of muscle? No worries, I just dance through or around the wall and get up in the caster's face

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
Just make sure your using str based weapons or the good old reckless attack won't work
One of the fun things about the combo is that Reckless and Rage boost STR attacks, but Sneak Attack only requires a Finesse weapon -- which gives you the option of STR or DEX

Which is not wrong. Just pointing it out because unless you want to be doing not so great damage with your melees then you might consider being a str rogue

Reckless attack does require that strength be used floor the attack, so I’m using a finesse weapon to get sneak attack and attacking with strength and letting the advantage make up for it being a meh stat.

Thats fair, and remeber if you level rogue enough to, 14 i think you can get infinite advantage since nothing can get adv on you

Level 18 actually. So probably not going to happen.
But I’ll have other options to generate advantage over time.
