Action Surge allows you to take an additional Action. If you're entitled to an additional Attack for some reason (like the Dread Ambusher trait from Gloomstalker Rager), can you double that Attack as well?
I'm asking because I can see the Fighter/GS Ranger being obnoxious on turn 1 of combat because the PC can take 3 Attacks (at lvl 11+), plus the additional Attack, then Action Surge and do it again for a total of EIGHT Attacks!
Action Surge gives you an aditional Action. You can use this Action however you want. If you have the Extra Attack feature or another feature that let's you attack more than once when using the Attack Action, then you can absolutely do that. As Dread Ambusher specifies it has to be your first turn in combat and you have to take the attack action, you can absolutely use it twice in the first turn by using Action Surge.
Remember those 8 attacks come from a level 14 + Character, so you can expect a bit of "OP" at that point.
They're at least lvl 14 (3 Ranger levels for Gloom Stalker, 11 Fighter levels for Extra Attack (2)). But otherwise yes, that's how it works. It's great, but then again a Fighter 14 has 2 ASIs more in comparison, and taking three levels in other subclasses than Gloom Stalker would reduce the damage potential but give other excellent benefits. And it's lvl 14. Wizards have been casting Forcecage for an entire level already, and single-classed Fighters have been doing six attacks since lvl 11 anyway.

Thanks for the rapid responses. I must confess that one of the reasons I asked is because I DM a game and the Fighter/XBow XPert/Sharpshooter is thinking of MCing into Ranger after he spends an ASI to get his Wisdom up and I wanted to know what the Alpha Strike could look like.
