If you successfully grapple a creature, then you can move them with you at the cost of having to move at half speed if they're fewer than two sizes smaller than you. If a creature is between you and an attacker, then you have half cover, which adds 2 to your AC for an attack. So yes, kinda.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.

The small living creature might take offense, though. If I were your GM, whatever you picked up would gnaw off your arm.
Honey badger shield - seemed a brilliant idea, but on reflection, not the best of ideas =D

Blanket disclaimer: I only ever state opinion. But I can sound terribly dogmatic - so if you feel I'm trying to tell you what to think, I'm really not, I swear. I'm telling you what I think, that's all.
Excuse me... what? But for science: No, as any normal (living) creature would struggle and wriggle to get free, as DM i'd rule that you don't have enough control to effectively use it as a shield. Also, any meat shield without armor wouldn't offer much protection for long anyway.
Part of dead creature might be fashioned as shield, but living creature don't count as object and thus aren't shield. You can always use a creature as cover against attack or effect originating on the opposite side of it for +2 bonus to AC and Dexterity saving throws, .

That's kind of funny how the half cover really does give the same AC benefit as a shield. I think it also makes sense sort of mechanically... a shield provides defense all around since you can move it to where ever it will help you most in a moment, but when grappling a struggling creature you can't just swing them around easily, so the AC boost only applies in a single direction.
But ... ok, hear me out - but what if it wasn't a small creature!
Ok, I realise it makes it harder, but what if you used a large creature as a shield. Like, an ogre. Just ... grab him by the nose ring, and drag him in front of you, to provide cover from the regiment of the King's Royal Archers - who, just recently, decided they didn't like you.
I mean, it's an even dumber plan (and my apologies to Cohawken), but at the same time, it's even funnier =)

Well, it's just as doable by RAW. Go for it.

Pretty much can i pick up a small living creature and us it to defend against incoming attacks and how would it work?
