I believe Xanathar's Guide to Everything limits these tools to creating Alchemist Fire, Acid, Antitoxin, Perfume, and Soap. Now I don't mind you can make commercial products that can lead to easy profitablity for a character; and based on the description of the tools it makes sense. However, I was surprised there isn't any mention of potions types or magical infusions. It seems that potions require use of the "Herbalism Kit", which I think makes sense for potions of healing, but would that make sense for a potion of Flying or Dragon's Breathe?
I am looking at adding elements to a character I am playing that will incorporate scroll scribing and potion making. The character is a career student type, so I think I can make the build work, but before I propose this with my DM, I would like to make sure my proposal has a bit of merit. The party has found several alchemist supplies and I want to know if and how they can be of beneficial use.
How does your table rule their use? Thank you in advance for both RAW interpretations and any homebrew options you can share.
I believe that, aside from a couple exceptions, tool proficiency requirements for magic items crafting is determined by the DM on a case-by-case basis. That is to say, crafting rule are vague and you should ask your DM. Personally, I'd probably allow the use of herbalist's or alchemist's kits for potions, maybe with a couple exceptions.
Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

There's no official crafting mechanics for 5e that I've found. Xanathar's gives some options for tool use. The PHB states that health potions require the Herbalism Kit. For all other potions, salves and ointments I would have my players use Alchemist's Supplies.
On a related note, I've also halved the time needed for all forms of crafting. RAW just seems too long to me and adventures don't really last (in game) for more than a matter of months these days.
