Can I make a weapon (let's say a short sword ) using phantasmal force. I would do 1d6 psych damage as it said in the spell discription but would that work.
You could, but it would only affect the target, and if your idea is for the sword to be "wielded" by you, then the target would need to get within 5' of you, too. Plus, you can't move from your space (since the illusion can't, either). The DM might even require you to roll to hit in order to damage (since it would look like you're wielding the sword, you'd need to swing it appropriately in order to "hit" the target), or maybe "roll to hit, and if you miss, the target takes the damage but gets Advantage on the Int (Investigation) check to determine whether it's an illusion (since they might have noticed they got hurt but your swing didn't match the trajectory of the sword). Not to mention that would use up your Action (you're not really attacking, but you need to act like you are, for the illusion to work).
Might be better to make a creature wielding a short sword, or an "animated short sword" in mid-air, instead. That way, the illusion can "attack" on its own (so no need to use your Action) and there is no need for you to swing (so no "missed" swings, and no Advantage on noticing it's an illusion).
