Im alredy seeing improvement opportunities. While the new dragonborn is overall better and a combination of both PHB 2014 version and Fizbans Treasury of Dragons version, theres room to fill in gaps without making it too complex and " overpowered "
Im also o****ing in GEM dragonborns elemental breath damages and resistances. Sure, its said new PHB is to keep close to the 2014 version, YET all manner of things from Tasha and some from Xanathar is included, like sub-classes and some racial/ species traits and such. But NO Gem Dragonborns??? Just what?
Anyway
I state in the text below and note things that should be decided with DM before making your draognborn.
This is all made at an impulse. Share your thoughts and have a go with it :)
***** REVISED Dragonborn for Player Handbook D&D 2024 ( + homebrew ) *****
-You have the following species traits.
-Creature Type. You are a Humanoid.
-Size. You are Medium.
-Speed. Your walking speed is 30 feet.
-Darkvision is 60 ft.
- Breath Weapon: Now functions similarly to what is in Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons. It can be used as part of an Attack action, has uses equal to your Proficiency Bonus, and damage scales from 1d10 up to 4d10 at level 17. Breath Weapon. When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can replace one of your attacks with an exhalation of magical energy in a 15-foot cone OR 30ft line ( choose depending on situation ). Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw (DC = 8 + your ((? Constitution modifier ?)) + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the creature takes 1d10 damage of the type associated with your Metallic Ancestry. On a successful save, it takes half as much damage. This damage increases by 1d10 when you reach 5th level (2d10), 11th level (3d10), and 17th level (4d10).
- You now choose the shape of your Breath Weapon each time you use it: 15-foot Cone or 30-foot Line.
- Draconic Resistance. You have resistance to the damage type associated with your Chromatic/ Gem/ Metallic Ancestry.
** Homebrew! **
You can add lesser known dragon ancestries from D&D editions and D&D 5e approximate/ compatible source material to their related dragonborns. And if you add TWO elemental damage types, split the dmg 50/ 50 for balance. And if having two Resistances, you can choose ONE depending on situation. Similar concept to breath weapon shape of cone or line.
>>>>>>>>!!! Extra effects casued by breath weapons should be declared and decided upon by asking the DM !!!<<
Example: True Yellow, coastal dragons ( Dragon Magazine 65#/ Dungeon Dad YT source ) spew salt crystals that can also blind as effect. The salt crystals do Physical BLUDGEONING damage. Resistances are Fire and Poison. Dragonborn translated. Use the aforementioned damage scaling as usual and insert well, BLUDGEONING. Regarding resistances choose EITHER Fire or Poison.
- Draconic Flight: At level 5, your Dragonborn can sprout spectral wings that appear to be made of the same energy as your Breath Weapon. You gain a Fly Speed for up to 10 minutes. This feature is once per Long Rest.
>>>>>>>>!!! Extra Traits should be declared and decided upon with DM !!!<<<<<<<<
Modified Xanathars Guide to Everything Dragonborn race, now species Feats. These Feats might feel natural a dragonborn of any lineage/ type to have.
****Dragon Fear****
Prerequisite: Dragonborn
When angered, you can radiate menace. You gain the following benefits:
- Increase your Strength, Constitution, or Charisma score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
- Instead of exhaling destructive energy, you can expend a use of your Breath Weapon trait to roar, forcing each creature of your choice within 30 feet of you to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 8 + ((? your proficiency bonus ?)) + your Charisma modifier). A target automatically succeeds on the save if it can’t hear or see you. On a failed save, a target becomes frightened of you for 1 minute. If the frightened target takes any damage, it can repeat the saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success.
****Dragon Hide & Melee****
Prerequisite: Dragonborn
You manifest scales and claws reminiscent of your draconic ancestors. You gain the following benefits:
Increase your Strength, Constitution, or Charisma score by 1, to a maximum of 20. Your scales harden. While you aren’t wearing armor, you can calculate your AC as 13 + your Dexterity modifier. You can use a shield and still gain this benefit.
You grow retractable claws from the tips of your fingers. Extending or retracting the claws requires no action. The claws are natural weapons, which you can use to make unarmed strikes. If you hit with them, you deal slashing damage equal to 1d4 + your Strength modifier, instead of the normal bludgeoning damage for an unarmed strike. MODIFIED. Claws counts as Multiattack ( attack with both hands for 1 Action ) adding 2d6 slashing damage + your Strength modifier. You can use a bonus action to Bite your opponent doing piercing damage equal to 1d12 + your Strenght modifier.
***** REVISED Draconic Sorcery sub class for Player Handbook D&D 2024 ( + homebrew ) *****
This is a VERY simple addition. Yet WotC didnt bother/ have time to slot in.
For the list regarding Elemental affinities/ resistances and dragon ancestries etc
Amethyst - Force
Sapphire - Thunder
Emerald - Psychic
Topaz - Necrotic
Crystal - Radiant
Regarding both Gem dragonborns in general and Gem elmental affinities/ resistances and dragon ancestries for Draconic Sorcery:
No. Theres no better or worse elments than the more used Fire, Cold, Poison, Lightning and Acid. We dont know the Monster Manual yet. BUT more " viable " elements can easly be countered and balanced.
Say Poison and Necrotic. Oh sure your breath weapon and spell of those elements are useless against monsters having those as resistances, well those monsters have equal trouble harming you.
Force for example. Sure its effective against alot of monsters. Buuut being resistant to it is not as useful most of the time. So no need to content/ dragonborn/ character gate regarding all these elements.
Anyway thats what I wanted to unburden of my shoulders.
Please share thoughts, constructively.
Cheers!
