Auto prone with no save? Druid and Vampire Patron polymorph in into Wolf and wow....
The auto prone appears in several other rules.... It seems this was not play tested or thought through at all. I would certainly require a house rule to allow a strength or acrobatics save.
Sounds like you had massive shifts in difficulty from it in your playtesting? I'd be curious to know the makeup of the party. Constantly prone-ing a target is great if you're melee heavy, but if your party consists of a bunch of ranged, it's probably a net minus.
Current is melee heavy with a druid being added. I am also getting a grimhollow campaign together hence the interest in Vampire Patron - Wolf form would allow him to attack and knock prone, than bonus action vampire bite.
There are a number of effects that just happen in ‘24. Prone just happens, extra damage effects that used to get a save no longer do, etc. We’ve been playing with it, and it hasn’t been an issue. The monsters are tougher, which they needed to be to get closer to their CR values, and cutting out the checks really speeds up the combat.

I remember some threads in the subforum talking about this auto stuff, if they’re interesting for you:
Compare Tiger & Lion, Tiger has this same effect, but it's not the auto-select for Moon ruids one might think, mostly because it's only 1 attack per round. The best feature of Tiger is Nimble Escape for zoomies of emanations.
Just my opinion.

- Phase Spider new 5e
- New Dire Wolf automatically knocks prone on hit?
