Hey, according to the wording in the source books it says as a gladiator you'd replace the instrument for an exotic but inexpensive weapon of your choice (like net or trident).
However it doesn't seem to grant proficiencies with them. Instead you get an instrument proficiency.
I know that ultimately the DM has the final say, but this post relates more to the character builder, also sorry if this is not the correct place to post this, but shouldn't it be added to the app? Or the rules should be kept as they are for game balance or something?
Backgrounds never grant weapon proficiencies. You could probably swap the instrument proficiency for a language or any other tool proficiency (except perhaps thieves tools) without upsetting anything greatly. If you want to avoid the instrument proficiency on the app then choose the Custom background option, then either 2 skills and 2 tools, or 2 skills, 1 tool and 1 language.
Seems like most characters with gladiator background are going to have martial weapon proficiency anyway, but if not, giving someone proficiency with a trident is going to break anything.
In terms of how to add the proficiency, you can't do it with a background, but on the character sheet, you can just add a weapon proficiency. Just click on the little gear next to languages and proficiencies, and you'll be able to add it to your character sheet.
