A player in my group said he wanted to ready an attack with the trigger being when his teammate moved into position, he would then use Commander's Strike . I allowed it at the time, but now that I've looked it up, I'm not so sure I made the right call.
The way Commander's Strike is written, it seems like the attack has to happen on the fighter's turn, not his teammate's turn.
So, can Commander's Strike be used as a readied action?
When you take the Attack action on your turn, you can forgo one of your attacks and use a bonus action to direct one of your companions to strike. When you do so, choose a friendly creature who can see or hear you and expend one superiority die. That creature can immediately use its reaction to make one weapon attack, adding the superiority die to the attack’s damage roll.
Since you must take the Attack action, and it must be on your turn, I would say that no, that should not have been allowed.

As mentioned, no it is not a valid option. The key is that Commander's Strike must happen on the Battlemaster's turn.
Maneuvering Attack is the maneuver that would allow an ally to move. However, that also requires they use their reaction, so they would not be able to benefit from Maneuvering Attack and Commander's Strike at the same time.

You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
Commander’s strike also says you need to use your own bonus action to allow your ally to make an attack. Even if the other reasons for not being able to do it weren’t there, you can’t use a bonus action after your turn ends (e.g readying an action to happen after your turn is over)

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?

Yeah, commander's strike is not an action, it is a special action. So it is not a valid choice for "ready an action."
