So I have a necromancer in my current gaming group, and she wants to use animate dead to turn other creatures besides humanoids into zombies and skeletons.
Is it possible, and if so, how would you do alterations?
My idea is that if she wanted to bring an ogre back, its Hit Dice would replace that many human undead.
Well there already is an ogre zombie stat block. For the most part you will have to use your discretion.
There is a sort of template specifically for converting humanoid NPC stats into zombies (and skeletons) here: https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/dungeon-masters-workshop#NPCStatBlocks but it really isn't for monster stats. From what I can tell they pretty much made new stats for zombie monsters that doesn't follow a particular template.
