My players are trying to say that the danger sense ability grants the barbarian extra knowledge above other players even if the checks don’t beat the DC. But all this ability does is grant advantage on Dex saves against threats they can see. Right?
At 2nd level, you gain an uncanny sense of when things nearby aren’t as they should be, giving you an edge when you dodge away from danger.
You have advantage on Dexterity saving throws against effects that you can see, such as traps and spells. To gain this benefit, you can’t be blinded, deafened, or incapacitated.
That's all it does. Anything not specifically stated in the above is not RAW.
One thing to note though, is that there is no perception DC check before this takes effect. Just that if the trap or spell is something that has a visual component (ie. arrow traps, dart traps, etc), they gain advantage. If it's a dart trap in darkness, and the barbarian lacks darkvision or similar ability, then they can't "see" it and therefore don't get advantage.

The ability does exactly what it says in the description. It only gives advantage on saving throws caused by effects the barbarian can see coming.
