With CR2 and interesting abilities it seemed like a good pick for a non-boss encounter for my lvl4 party of adventurers
However, after closer inspection it seems to me that she is way more powerful than a typical CR2 creature. Let's compare it to a CR2 Ogre for instance, since it a pretty straightforward brute : https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Ogre#content
It has -15 Hit Points on average (44 vs 59)
It has +2AC (13 vs 11)
Its attacks have -1 to hit (+5 vs +6)
Its blinding acid deals more damage than the Ogre's club (16 vs 13 on average) BUT it is ranged AND blinds the target
Its Drowning Kiss, it it lands, deals 22 damage AND takes the breath way from the player character, making it quite life threatning
If they fight her on water (and where else would it happen?) she can turn invisible while fighting, gaining advantage on all attacks and imposing disadvantage on all attacks against her
Again if on water it is significantly faster than any PC (60ft vs typical 15ft swimming speed)
It has Water Lash and Shape Water for added flexibility
To me it seems like the Nereid is way way more dangerous than an Ogre, and I'm a bit worried of throwing at my players a bit more than they can chew in a non-boss encounter. Am I missing something here?
Just modify it. If you've noticed this many details about it that seem too strong for your liking, it's too strong for your liking. Pretty simple stuff there. The game isn't really balanced(like all the data was feed into a simulator to compile results), it was just play-tested and not found obnoxious by some people.
Play the Nereid against the Ogre multiple times and see who wins most, lol.
Hi all,
I was thinking of using a Nereid in an upcoming encounter for my party. It's a CR2 creature from "Tales from the Yawning Portal": https://jsigvard.com/dnd/monster.php?m=Nereid

It depends on the size of your party. It has only 44 hp, and its attacks only affect 1 person per turn.
Faerie Fire is only a 1st level spell. My PCs use this to negate invisibility quite well.
