What are the uses for an empty crystal ball? I'm a DM currently running The Death House/Curse of Strahd, and one of my players put the crystal ball the statue of Strahd on the first floor of the Durst House dungeon was holding in his inventory. After casting Identify on it, another player concluded that, after the Shadows previously contained within it have been freed and defeated, it's now a simple, magic-less crystal orb, sharing this discovery with the rest of the party.
Now that it's in the possession of one of my players, what can this empty glass orb be used as? Can I let him craft a magic item from it, re-kindling its magical properties? Any help and/or suggestions would be appreciated!
It can be used as an arcane focus or sold for 25 GP. Note that they call it an "orb" which to me suggests it is closer to the size of a baseball rather than a classic crystal ball, such as Madame Eva's. It is purely cosmetic, but a player could use it with a Staff of Adornment, and it would look pretty cool. Perhaps next time they have a combat encounter outside of Death House, that could be some loot. Maybe the zombie of some novice wizard still holds it and wields it like a quarterstaff. It could hilariously have one of the zombie's eyes as the item floating above it.
Unfortunately, it is not expensive enough for the material components for Scrying. I tried searching for other spells with a GP cost that require a crystal orb/ball, but could not find anything. Wish we could filter material spell costs a little better in dndbeyond.
Perhaps Victor or The Mad Mage (post regaining his sanity) could perform some ritual to transform it into an Orb of Shielding of some kind. Crystal is not really listed under as one of the varieties, but you can just say this was an orb on a statue of Strahd, found in a spooky haunted house, so it is naturally attuned to Necrotic energy.

Just spellcasting focus afaik. But you can let them craft magic items if you want (I'm always in favor of that for homebrew games).
Bookend, paper weight, prop for fortune telling, bonking someone on the back of their head.
A very fancy ball for going bowling.

I like to do this. It is great sidequest material. Ask what they want to make out of it and plan it out.
You might find that players will want to skin animals or collect teeth or bones. It's kind of fun to give them options.
