I am running a campaign in which the party was trading favors with a powerful politician. Unknown to them, the favor they would have to do in return was helping in the security for a summoning and binding ritual of a noble genie. They decide to have a conversation with the genie during the ritual, and decide they do not want to take part in enslaving it. They subdue the wizard NPC who was in charge of binding the genie to a vessel, and begin to play out their options. So the genie, trapped, asks one of them what they would want in return for releasing it. The role play happened so quickly that no one noticed the phrasing that was used. "What do you wish for in return for my freedom." In haste, the player (a kenku, who was masterfully only using dialogue that had been used in other interactions) simply replied, "Mercy."
I have several ideas about what i'd like to do with this very broad wish, that is still unknown to the players. Would love to hear some input.
If player death is on the table, next time that character is about to become incapacitated, the Genie could suddenly appear and save their life.
You could also have an ability like "Once per short rest you gain advantage on a Charisma (Persuasion) check when asking for forgiveness.
You could also really give it a genie flair and turn it on its head. If the player ever wants to unjustly harm something, remind them that they wished for mercy, and they are suddenly overcome with a want to spare the creature they are about to end without mercy. This could be very interesting, as if they have trouble with a guard that is not necessarily an awful person, and they send the Kenku to "take care of them" problems could arise, making their encounters all the more interesting.
Just some ideas :)
