I am trying to get ideas for a large scale library similar to Candlekeep for a homebrew setting I've read all their is in the 5e Candlekeep adventure but I am not aware of any past edition lore for it, so is there any facts about Candlekeep and its keepers or about the library itself that would be interesting to base things off of?
Well Give us a bit of an idea on your Homebrew that you wish to place Candlekeep, or something similar to it, that you want to put into your homebrew, because I know a few fictional Libraries or interdimensional locations, like Fargrave from Elder Scrolls Online, or Wan Shi Tong's Library from the Avatar Series.
The FR Wiki has a pretty decent page for summary. Not sure if it provides an awful lot more that the adventure, but there are an awful lot of references at the bottom of the page: https://forgottenrealms.fandom.com/wiki/Candlekeep
Thank you both, I am mostly looking for a place to put a character after the events of a campaign I'm currently in the characters entire thing is journaling everything pages of details of the stories events, which outside of the campaign lets us look over what all we have done and kind of reminisce. The goal is for them to end up somewhere similar to Candlekeep a large scale library where they can further their knowledge put their own story into the library and spend their time looking over others, but I'm not sure how to do like the functions of the library which is why I looked at Candlekeep for inspiration with its Keepers and Avowed, but if anyone has any other large fictional libraries to take inspiration from I'm open to listening.
Well Wan Shi Tong's Lubrary has a giant owl spirit of the same name that protects the knowledge and allows for people to enter the Library, however, his library is originally in the middle of a vast desert but then sinks it back into the spirit world in order to protect its secrets. While Fargrave is a pocket Realm of Oblivion in TES and actually has no ruling Daedric Prince. I also have it that when I introduce Strixhaven Academy, I make sure it's part of an interplanar system that is held in its own pocket dimension to keep he Dragon Gods from Interfering with it.
So what I would do, in your position, is have it that they discover the Library itself in a pocket universe, and have it that there is a central figure who allows heroes who enter to come and go and use the Knowledge they gain as they please. Heck he even has quarters for them there to use if they need to make more permanent stays, but he/she/they have two conditions that must be met to allow them entry and usage of the Library.
First, to gain entry, they must give up a Secret they dare not tell anyone else, and the Keeper remembers everything about that person once it has passed on, causing it to become the secret password that allows the Keeper to recognize the person as true or false, and the only way to fool the Keeper is to roll a 25 in Deception.
Second, to allow usage of the Library and the quarters within, including the various laboratories and workshops within, the user needs to trade knowledge that relates to the Intelligence Skills, new things that they have learned on their journey (which I would use a highlighter to mark and then bold out once it has been traded) each time they visit the Library. This allows the Keeper to see their journey between the previous sharing to the current and mark them down with perfect accuracy and he writes down everything to ensure an unadulterated story. Heck the Keeper has done this for every party the Keeper has run into, both good and evil, for thousands of years, and thus has allowed new adventurers to learn unadulterated versions of the past through the eyes of the villains and heroes from a third party perspective, granting new insights and lost knowledge, though sometimes what they learn drives them mad.
As for the Keeper, decide on the monster type but make them a CR 30 Monster that ensures they can protect the Library and its knowledge.
If you can't tell the Keeper is a huge need who loves A good story and he expands his knowledge through his "patrons" and by being a nice guy until his patrons turn on him and then hew becomes a real monster.
In fact it would make so much sense if the Keeper saw his patrons as those who bring him stories so he can record them and read them over and over again!
