I’m planning on playing a ranger who can summon ghosts. I want him to have a druidic focus related to the ghosts of a particular event. (A bandit raid he didn’t prevent.) What would be a good, symbolic idea?
Something made from a tree whose roots soaked up the blood of the victims of the raid, or which grew in the graveyard where they were buried

Active characters:
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
If you wanna do something really creepy, make the druidic focus the shrunken head of one of the bandits.
If you want something much lower on the yeesh factor, give him a talisman strung with keepsakes from each of the victims (maybe they had good luck charms or decorative coins, or some other small object that could be looped on a string)
The first thing I thought of was Klaus Hargreeves of Umbrella Academy on Netflix.
But for this idea I like the bandit raid. That is generic enough that you could have a lot of different scenarios.
I imagine a kid who was in a large caravan with their family moving to a new area to live. They are attacked on the road by "A group of bandits" who were quite brutal. Their goal was to kill everyone and take their valuables. During this attack a local Treant/Dryad took pity on the child and somehow communicated to them to hide behind or maybe inside/under the tree. At this point he creates a bond with the tree. Due to whatever you want, those souls were trapped in purgatory with their anchor being the area, and the connection could be the tree had absorbed their blood from the battle. Maybe a few unlucky bandits are in this pact which could really be a fun plot hook. The child grows up having to hear these voices until such a time they start caring, and have invested their ability and interest into freeing these souls. Maybe he can tap into the souls for divination, and under dire circumstance maybe summon a ghost shadow, specter, or a wraith to serve as a defender. Maybe there is a favorite voice that serves as a best friend and companion (A familiar) that helps guide them on their mission to release the spirits. Another fun trick is giving the dead spirits some corporeal abilities that mimick the various Bigby's hands, or use them as scouts or seeing through objects.
Personally I love your idea.

I am not sure what my Spirit Animal is. But whatever that thing is, I am pretty sure it has rabies!

So basic pemise is that bandits attacked small group (hamlet/merchant party/adventurers party). Victims were murdered and their blood was spilled onto the ground. Maybe one of the victims was tortured and cursed the bandits (verbally, not magically). Either way blood was spilled on the ground. Druidic focus would be worms that ate/processed the blooded ground. So your character could carry them in a pot with a bit of earth, which should be changed every once in a while.

Hey thanks guys, these all sound like ideas with lots of potential.
