I did some poking around and couldn't find a real answer to what the deal with the necromantic energy in the crevasse under Tresendar Manor was about? The book says:
"The bottom of the crevasse feels unnaturally cold. When viewed with a detect magic spell, the area emanates a faint necromantic aura. The magic causes all organic matter in the crevasse to age and decompose at half the normal rate."
And thats the only reference to it. It just seems such an odd detail to throw in and not have it come up or be connected to anything else in the adventure?
I'd be tempted to say its just an effect of the nothic's presence, but nothics are attracted TO areas of magical power, which would imply it is the explanation as to why the nothic is even there at all, but not why the energy is there in the first place.
Part of me is wondering if this is something that is going to come up during the new Phandelver campaign that is coming up later this year. I know the obelisks are coming back up, but if it was tied back to that one off line from 9 years ago as well, well dang that is some deep planning lol!
Most books have offhand weird magical things, places, or story hooks, with the express purpose of getting you to think up scenarios to use them. It could very well be part of a bigger whole, but it can also just as easily be a sidebar comment about something unrelated to the (current) plot.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?

Thats fair, my own party turned it in to their own hook when they decided they would set up a research lab when they took over Tresendar to study it. I guess I just wanted it to be connected because it would be cool if they planned that far ahead lol
Hey - if you're the DM, then I have great news! In your game, they CAN be connected! That's the beauty of those random story hooks. They get players invested in the world, and then the DM can bring those hooks back to the plot as a way to tie the narrative together with the world.

When my party took over the manor, we used it to store supplies. Our rogue's exact words were "magic refrigerator"
My cleric said virtually the same thing, lol
My whole party said that
Wisea$$ DM and Player since 1979.
My party has started talking about using it as a morgue to store bodies in until they can take them in to collect bounties, the freaking sociopaths!
