making a charecter for my cousin's next campagn, and I am making a gnoll barbarian. I am using the stats for making NPCs in the DM's guid.
Name: ROkata (but most people call him Chuckles). He looks like an 7 ft tall spotted hyena.
Strength 16, Dexterity 13, Constitution 14, Inteligence 9, Wisdom 11, Charisma 9 (this includes the +2 Stength and -2 Inteligence).
Dark Vission 60ft.
Move 30ft
Speaks Common, Gnoll, and Gnome
Has Rage, Unarmored Defense of a Barbarian, a D4 piercing damage bite attack and Rampage (he reduces an enemy to 0HP in melee and can make a bonus action to move half its movement to bite another enemy).
Back Story: Like most gnolls, Chuckles lived to fight and eat. Unlike most gnolls, he was curious about the world around him. When his clan was destroyed, he was forced to wonder and soon enough, do something he never thought to do before: Think. It was hard for him, but the more he thought the more curious he became. The more curious he became the more he thought. To get by, he decided to become a murder bounty hunter. Not the smartest thing on two legs, he's smart enough to know most of his targets frequent the same 12 bad guy bars. The smart ones give up. Most have to be draged to the guard post kicking and screaming. If he's lucky, Chuckles only has to turn in the heads (the rest inevitably go in his guts).
He is learning to read and write, though he''s at a child's level. That said, he will always be a chaotic mess.
Still deciding what kind of barbarian, but I got three 2 levels to decide.
For sub-class, given your backstory, Ancestral Guardian may be fun. Gnolls are described as very family, and pack, focused, very loyal to their own kind and their own family. This is said to show itself most clearly in battle where they fight and defend each other. Gnolls are instinctively pack creatures and are said to try to find and form "surrogate packs" if their own original packs are destroyed.
It really is quite tragic that his whole pack was killed, it'd certainly hit him harder than if just his mother and father and siblings were killed. Poor Chuckles' entire extended family, all his cousins and aunties, his grand parents, everyone he ever knew and loved was killed and he knows it. Big sadge. Hence my suggestion of Ancestral Guardian; Maybe the spirits of his dead family now gather around him in battle to try to still fight by his side.
I invite you to read the Forgotten Realms' wiki page on gnolls in 5e. There're a lot of good details about gnoll life similar to what I posted above that you can use to bring interesting roleplay to your character.
Have fun!
