Hi all! So I've only been playing since April and my group isn't super regular, so I don't have all of the knowledge that someone who's been playing regularly for a longer time, but I wanted to start working on my lore/general knowledge and incorporating it into my characters. So, after a lot of research, I made a new character, but I'm hesitant to actually play her in case her background is just terrible or wrong or makes no sense as far as lore and race goes.
Anyway! Here's her character profile. I made the art myself. Her name is Hope, and she's a tiefling paladin.
Hope was captured as a child by a small and violent Church of Shar group as a child and witnessed countless horrific acts as a part of their recruitment processes. They would murder and torture from their group of prisoners. Others would be used as slaves and servants that would feed the Church of Shar group members, clean the living areas, and tend to other general needs of their captors.
As an adolescent, once she became more aware of her misfortune and the suffering of those around her, she would lay awake at night and pray to any who would hear her to please help her and the other prisoners! Selune eventually heard her pleas and came to her in a vision, appearing as a tiefling to her, explaining that she would give her the strength and resources to fight against her captors.
The next night, she drugged every member of the clergy, and then killed them in the night. She escaped and managed to get her fellow prisoners out as well, but had suffered emotional, mental, and physical abuse for so long that she was forever scarred.
Now she worships as a part of the Church of Selune and devotes herself to her, hoping to eradicate the Church of Shar. She found herself nameless after she left, seeing as she was taken before she knew her own name, and so decided to give herself the human name of Hope.
Any feedback is really appreciated. Thank you in advance!
I've been playing a Tiefling (Hexblade) for a few months, and I think it really helps gameplay to have a flaw or two. Is she reckless? Too trusting? Was she betrayed by a particular race? What haunts her?
Sorry - I realized I went real dark right off the bat... I may be a bit tainted by my PC Ash's background. But, yours did have a pretty tragic childhood.
What are Hope's hopes? What memories make her happy, or give her some calm? Was there a benefactor in the orphanage who taught her some valuable skills?

She's definitely reckless, I classed her as chaotic good. From the suggested flaws that they generate on the character builder, I picked that she sees the worst in people. Her childhood left her with a lot of leftover trauma. Her hope is to eliminate the Church of Shar and be an advocate for children (with a bias for tiefling children) in crisis. She also chose the name Hope because she wanted a reminder that she could rise out of what seems like a hopeless situation. There were a few adult figures that she managed to connect with for a little bit, but as these things go, their captors wanted to keep them isolated, so those connections usually didn't last for long.
She uses a morningstar, which I felt would do well for someone that didn't have a lot of weaponry background. She does also have javelins and a long bow, but I'm planning on mainly using the morningstar. I felt that most of her training would come after escaping and devoting herself to Selune, sort of home-training herself. (The only other connection I can bring to this would be that it's similar to Sora's method of swinging his keyblade around like a bat in Kingdom Hearts 1 as opposed to the other characters that are trained to use it more similarly to a sword.)
Your questions made me really think hard! Thank you!
I like this. It's a solid start for any campaign. So I'm curious on how you plan on moving forward in the near term (like to 3rd level). There are threads of faith and revenge? Which is the driver? If you had to choose between them, where do you stand?
Mechanically:
What oath is more important to you? Faith(devotion) to Selune or Vengeance against Shar?
What background you plan? An Acolyte to Selune? a Folk Hero as someone who stood up against Shar? A haunted one for being in the clutches of Shar for too long?
Again, nice background. Interested to hear where it takes you.
Thank you! She's definitely more revenge driven and it takes first place, but she's devoted herself to Selune, seeing her as her original savior who granted her the strength to escape in the first place. The vengeance against Shar is definitely more important for her. My first plan is to choose a haunted one background due to the depths of her trauma, but if it ends up not fitting, I'd go down the folk hero path. An acolyte is entirely out of the question, I think. She has a rage that she feels has to be expressed against the Church of Shar and their followers. I don't think being an acolyte would allow that rage to be recognized, would it?
They arent mutually exclusive from a story perspective.
Acolyte would represent devotion to Selune, so while selune opposes Shar, you are more direct about it. So if you want conflict between two different sets of desires/beliefs it would make an interesting choice.
This is a point where you should talk to your dm as well. Does Selune have a mititant sect against Shar? Would they oppose active assaults against Shars church?
Her drive for vengeance is more important to her than her devotion to Selune. I want to see her overcome her past traumas and move past them as a person, resolving the anger against others she holds. To get to a point where her devotion becomes more important than her vengeance I think would be a goal for her progression as a character.

Hey 3G,

Hope that helps...

And it is your story...what did you want to tell?
I love me a good militant religious group in fiction. Think knights templar but with magic and they actually have proof that their god supports them

Well it depends on how the campaign processes. You could growin in to a better person... or spiral into a pit you won't return.
Right, of course. Just, ideally, she grows and becomes at peace.

Good. Great drawing by the way.

Thank you! I was super proud of how it came out.
Edit: I'm on mobile and things are getting funky with my formatting. Thank you everyone who helped me!
