Im looking for tips for both roleplaying and character optimization for my Arcane trickster who is considering multiclassing into warlock. The reason for multiclassing is based on narrative only so please don't suggest any other classes that you think would be a more powerful build, that is not what i'm interested in. For me roleplaying your disadvantages can make the game really interesting.
Basic Character description:
Denver Sunh
Half-orc
Charlatan
Arcane trickster lvl 4
stats: | str 10 | dex 16 | Con 12 | int 14 | wisdom 13 | cha 13 |
Spells: Mage hand legerdemain, message, minor illusion, Find familiar, Charm person, sleep, disguise self
Has a powerful nemesis with influence across the sword coast that is looking for him and he is living a life on the run with many different identities.
The one who is teaching him all his wizard spells is his familiar who whispers to him in his sleep. The familiar (an owl named Christopher Robin) has recently turned out to be a fiend. I have made sure that i only know as much as my character knows, so at the moment only the DM would know his intentions, and he likes the idea of exploring a warlock narrative.
Has also recently been brought in to the Zhentarim for protection in return for services. Currently the other characters have yet to be informed of this.
His current mission is to find a replacement for his leg.
He knows that the more powerful allies and the more powerful he can become himself the more likely it is for him to bring down his nemesis. Therefor he is considering asking Christopher Robin for more power.
My ideas:
So i'm quite stoked about this idea as it will bring a whole new dimension into the narrative that builds on the DMs narrative decision to make Denvers familiar a fiend.
When it comes to what spells to pick (two cantrips, two 1st lvl) i have looked at a few possibilities:
Eldrich blast – Gives a really good option for ranged attacks when sneak attack isn't an option. Also the spell is so visually different from all his other spells which really reinforces the feeling that his powers has taken a new form.
Booming blade – Like Eldrich blast it scales with my overall level and could be really useful with sneak attack and the disengage action.
Green Flame – Like booming blade but for making extra damage on a secondary creature. Also has the visual aspect with the green flames.
Comprehend language – could be the spell Christopher teaches Denver in order for them to communicate fully outside of his dreams. Also a pretty useful spell in certain cases.
Hex – Just a good ass spell letting me dish out more damage.
Armor of Agatha – Just a pretty cool spell. Probably not worth it if i don't lvl up more in warlock.
Please give me all your cool ideas and tips for how to make this build super interesting narratively, fun to roleplay and cool in a fight. Let me know what spells you would take and why! It's worth letting you know i'm always down for solving a fight without having to fight (Denver once tricked a beholder to give up his watch duties just by using minor illusion and a good dice roll.)
Toll of the Dead is underrated, unexpected, interesting, and got some dark flavor. I actually think it's a better cantrip than Eldritch Blast for you, since using Eldritch Blast is basically putting all your damage options in Attack Rolls. Though if you don't have Xanathar's Guide to everything then that's obviously not an option. Chill Touch will give you the same flair, but it's still an Attack Roll and its more Defensive.
You probably want to grab Prestidigitation so that you can increase your Roleplaying options.
Otherwise, yeah, Green-Flame Blade is a good Roleplay and Gameplay Cantrip. Don't get Eldritch Blast, it's generic and boring. (Shush, don't tell anyone, it's actually not as good as most people think it is)
I would suggest Hex and Witch Bolt as the Warlock Spells. Witch Bolt is literally Force Lightning man. Wouldn't your character want to painfully electrocute that nemesis that has caused him such grief? I think if I was playing him, I would. As for Hex, probably something that happens when you get frustrated with an enemy.

Toll of the dead sounds pretty badass. I have Xhanthars guide so thats no problem. I have a quite low charisma score though so a bit unsure about choosing saving throw based spells. But yeah i must admit it's thematically a really cool spell.
It's fair to say that my character wants to kill his nemesis in the most painful way possible. He used to be her slave so he has a lot of pain debt to repay. Force lightning is like the most sith you can do! I might not pick it this level though cuz the narrative will determine how many warlock levels i will do and i don't wanna be stuck with a 1st level slot spell that wont really be viable to use at higher levels. But cool tip, i'll definitely consider it for later :)
I think Hex and green flame or booming blade makes sense for this level and yeah i might go with Prestidigitation cuz that really fits how i play my character! Will save witchbolt and toll of the dead for later levels!
Cantrips are pretty much up in the air. Pick what you think would work best for your character.
For your first level spells, Hex is always nice, but something that should be noted is that since you can't cast another spell other than a cantrip on that turn, a cantrip with a saving throw will not trigger the extra damage, but a cantrip like Eldritch blast will.
Another interesting first level spell to look at could be Arms of Hadar. It's dark and twisted, plus once you have access to 3rd level warlock spells you could "upgrade" it to the Hunger of Hadar.
