My group is in the beginnings of starting a new campaign and so I'm building a new character. I've decided that this character is going to be a tiefling who started out as a warlock, saw the reality ending shit their cult and patron were up to and broke their pact to become a rogue. I have no idea how this would work in the technical side of things as I've never multi classed in anything besides taking a level in cleric here and there. Help.
If it helps, our groups usually start the party at level 3 or level 5
How do you envision playing the character? There's a lot of ways to make a great rogue|lock. I think the key is going to be deciding how you want the character to play, then choose the archetypes and spells from warlock to support that. I'd probably be looking at 2 levels of warlock to start off, likely fiend pact. Then, rogue. How do you want to play as a rogue since that sounds like it will be your main focus? Will you be ranged or will you be melee? Choose your invocations to better support your roguishness. Imo, ranged probably works best, so you can hex things and get a little more damage without worrying about too many conc checks. You won't need eldritch blast because you can't sneak attack with it.
If you decide to melee, booming blade might be a good pick as it makes it useful for hitting something then disengaging away so it has to chase you and proc booming blade....or do nothing. Works best with swashbuckler.
Armor of shadows might be a useful invocation to get free mage armor. It's the equivalent of studded leather +1. It's a solid pick for a rogue.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.
I guess it depends on if you'll decide to stop taking Warlock levels... and, if you're doing Tome, Blade, or Chain. If Blade, 5 levels of Lock can get you a second attack, depending on your Invocations. The thing to remember is that your Spells and Invocations will be "stuck" if you just go rogue after that. So, choose carefully, and consider that you may acquire magic items that either surpass - or augment - your lower level spells.
I did the opposite - went Warlock for 5 levels in Hexblade, then a 3 level dip for Rogue Swashbuckler, then 12 more Warlock levels. But, I was mainly focused on melee, Smites, and AoE spells.
