So, I'm looking to understand the Ethereal plane better than I do now, so that I can create a magical item which is inspired by a weapon in one of my favourite book series.
The weapon is called "The Divider" and it is described as having two edges - one here, and one on the other side.
This makes it nigh unstoppable in the books but the idea I'd like to make is a weapon which strikes both in this plane and on the border ethereal. This makes it effective vs ghosts but I'm wondering what else it would do if you strike someone with a weapon which exists in two planes of existence? Do people have a presence in the border ethereal all the time? Would it prevent death saves, as your soul is struck down as well?
Alas, most of the information I have found doesn't help!
I would say that the main benefits of this weapon come when you are on the Ethereal plane - Etherealness doesn't allow you to affect creatures on the material plane, but this item could well be used that way. As such, I would think about the ethereal creatures who slay people invisibly with such a blade - yet can't be seen by blindsight or spells such as see invisibility.
The reversed effect of this item seems the more potent use and if this isn't the intent of the weapon then perhaps reconsider how it affects ghosts and the like. I might also suggest making it so that the wielder can see into the Border Ethereal as opposed to slashing around blindly because they still can't see the ghost they're going after.
A modified Nine Lives Stealer might well be a good selection for the idea of a sword that strikes at the soul at the same time as the body.

Chilling kinda vibe.
