I have a Lvl 3 Drow Ranger - Horizon Walker and have been thinking ahead for when our group levels up (we do Milestone leveling so idk when we level up) what Feat I want to take and I just can't decide on what would fit her for role playing reasons.
My first thought was Drow High Magic, but while the spells it gives are really great, it wouldn't fit my chara role playing wise, because she has no connection to the Underdark, or her House anymore. Background:
Gilli was born in Underdark to one of the Houses in one of the Drow Cities. When she was around 10-12 another house decided to attack her house to eridicate them. One of her family members decided to save her by throwing her into a portal. Said portal sent her to the Feywild where she was found by a group of Eladrin, who decided to take care of her. She lived with them for most of her life and they thought her most of what she knows (her skills and her values). She went back to the material plane around 10-20 years ago and has been adventuring through the world since.
So my next thought was, that because she grew up in the Feywilds, I could take the Fey Touched feat, I already get Misty Step from Horizon Walker, but it also gives another 1st Level spell of my choice + increases either INT, WIS, or CHA by 1.
The Observant feat also looked interesting as so far I'm the one of our group who goes scouting ahead. (the other charas are a Redemption Oath Paladin, an Arcane Trickster Rogue and an Aberrant Mind Sorcerer (DM controlled))
Yesterday I was reading Eilistraee's page on the Forgotten Realms wiki, because my Drow follows her and I wanted to know more about her than what's written in Mordekainen's Tome of Foes for RP and there I saw that it says: "Furthermore, before being a warrior or a huntress, Eilistraee was first and foremost a bard and an artist." So I've been thinking of taking the Magic Initiate feat and then going with "Bard". My only problem there is that my Drow's CHA stat is only a 12. :/
So far I'm mostly leaning towards either Fey Touched, or Magic Initiate.
Pros of FT: INT, WIS, or CHA stat increase +1 plus Misty Step and another 1st Level Spell of my choice (Divination or Enchantment) Cons of FT: I already get Misty Step from being a Horizon Walker. Reason for choice: My chara grew up in the Feywilds.
Pros of MI: I get two Cantrips and one 1st Level Spell of my choice from the chosen class spell list (in this case Bard) Cons of MI: The spells get cast of the class' spell casting modifier, which in the case of Bard would be CHA and my CHA stat isn't that high. Reason for choice: My chara follows Eilistraee.
Opinions? Ideas for Feats I haven't thought about yet?
Add 2 points to dex. It won’t give you any new toys, but it will give you a boost to AC, to hit, damage, initiative, dex saves, and a bunch of skills (like stealth when you’re scouting ahead) It will come up useful in every combat encounter.
If you do pick up MI for bard spells, just don’t take attack spells. Instead choose spells that buff you or allies, and your low casting stat won’t matter.
You want to up your stats right now, not take a feat. It looks like you have a lot of concentration spells, and are a melee combatant. Up your CON or DEX. As a ranger, you don't get a lot of spell slots, so you want to make them last -- having a higher AC means less hits going through to make you lose concentration, having a higher CON means a better chance of succeeding on the saving throw to maintain concentration. Of the two, Xalthu is right, DEX will get you more, but CON still is an option.
I'm also of the opinion that a +2 DEX will have a much greater impact on your game... it affects practically everything you try to do.
As for the feats, I'd still recommend Fey Touched over MI. Misty Step is a bit redundant since you already get it as a Horizon Walker, but keep in mind that it also gives you one free cast of Misty Step per day without using a spell slot, so while you don't get the full benefit of a new spell learned, you still save yourself two spell slots for the spells you learn.
EDIT: I also wanted to mention that, if you're interested in Drow High Magic, you don't necessarily need to say that the character needs a deep connection to their people or the Underdark... it could be just latent power they have deep inside themselves through pure genetics. Sort of like being a "lesser sorcerer"... they're not born with enough inherent magic to be able to be a sorcerer as a class, but just enough for a few specific spells to manifest.
You could switch subclasses to fey wanderer thanks to tashas guidance if you really want to dip a ranger role while dabbling in bard. It may represent the time spend on the fey wild and growing/learning with eladrin A bit more than the horizon walker.
it trades out your bonus action for an extra 1d8 every round for a lesser damage boost of 1d4, but frees up your bonus action for other things.
it gives proficiency in a charisma skill, while also allowing you to add your wisdom mod to all charisma checks you make regardless of proficiency.
it continues to give you access to misty step at level 5, and teleportation continues to be awesome and something a ranger normally doesn’t have access to. And now you won’t have to give up your bonus damage to teleport.
all that being said... I also vote dexterity+2. After looking at your stats, your charisma and wisdom would combine quite well with the positive mods in both for fey wanderer.
how has it been dealing with sunlight sensitivity on an attack roll based striker?
I hadn't thought that +2 to DEX might be that important (I also have a CotL Druid with lesser stats who's doing pretty good in fights) but now I'll def consider it.

I actually like that idea, I had been torn about which subclass I wanted to go with (Fey Wanderer, or Horizon Walker) and chose HW because the subclass spells seemed more useful, even tho I absolutely loved all the flavour text of FW. Definitely going to talk to my DM about this once we level up. Only thing that kinda concerns me, is that I'd lose the ability to detect portals. We're currently in the Feywilds after walking through a portal and are now looking to find a way back to the material plane.
It's not that bad. My current combat strategy is that at the beginning of a fight I'll use my inherit Drow Magic to cast Faerie Fire to give my friends advantage and negate my disatvantage to get straight attack rolls. (IF Faerie Fire hits ofc) The only fight we had so far was against 2 (3 total, but the 3rd didn't fight) Redcaps, which ended in one Redcap fleeing in fear and the other getting so badly hurt that his dad called for parley and even let us take some of his loot out of a treasure chest if we let his sons live. xD
