I'm new to dnd and I'm making my first character. He's a Grung rogue pirate and i have a rough backstory but am having trouble figuring out how he went from being a pirate to an adventurer and why he is joining the party. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Also, do I need to or should i find a campaign first and then work the backstory around that?
You should absolutely find a campaign first. Your DM may have some places to fit your character in already, and you'll likely need to work with the rest of the party to figure out why you are all together.
And a word of advice, don't get too attached to the character. Many DMs have house rules about how they are generated (how to generate ability scores, some races may be banned, etc.), and you may need to start over from scratch. Or you might find they have a desert campaign planned, and your pirate background won't make any sense, as an example.
I agree with post #2 above, it is nice to try out different PC's (races, classes, stats, etc) but a GM may have specific things (rules, setting feel and mode) in mind for their game that do not fit in with your PC concept.
Good Luck

Welcome to the game.
