Is multiclassing into monk on level 4+5 for Fury of Blows strong enough to delay the Extra Attack on level 5? Ignoring Crimson Rite upramp time for the evaluation.
A Lycan 3/Monk 17 is better than a Lycan 20 in a lot of ways. Regeneration and advantage on will saves to stay in control are the only things you really miss out on. Well, that and about 3 less damage per strike for Crimson Right damage... but with an extra attack per round, that doesn't feel like a big deal. In exchange, you become tankier, faster, attack more often (but less accurately and a little less damage per strike), and get whatever other magical monk stuff your subclass gets you.
What you lose from going Monk 17 is:
number of transformtaions (two instead of three, per short rest... but you do unarmed damage while not shifted, so nbd)
lose a 30 foot (or 60 foot with amplify) fear/stun vs. Wisdom
lose advantage against foes with one of your allies within 5 feet
lose advantage on Will Saves to avoid berserk
lose half-proficiency bonus (3) on unarmd strike damage and to-hit.
lose 1+con modifier regeneration per round when under 1/2 HP
Immunity to Fear and advantage vs charm (though you can still end such effects with an action)
+30 feet darkvision
Crimson rite is 1d4 (3) instead of 1d10 (6) damage.
More blood curses (but you can still pick up the only one that's actually good, Eyeless).
What you gain from Monk 17 is:
A much better AC (probably 21 at 20, instead of 16).
Proficiency in all saving throws
Faster speed (+25 feet instead of +10)
Immunity to Disease & Poison
Evasion
Stunning Strike
One more attack per round when using Flurry of Blows
Ability to Dodge and Dash as a bonus action
Monk Subclass features
As a long death, get back a Fear howl, and become very very tanky!
As an open hand, knock people prone or push them, and gain a self-heal
As a shadow, become a terrifying alpha predator that slips through the shadows!
I do think a Lycan 3/Monk 17 is better than a pure monk, because Monk 18-20 don't really provide anything of real value other than a dribble of Ki when you're completely out at the start of a fight, but in exchange you pick up Curse of the Eyeless, +1 AC while shifted, +1d4 elemental damage per strike, Archery style (hey, why not?), and favored enemy fey/fiend/undead.
A 3/17 split also costs you an ASI or Feat, so it's worth looking at the level 17 monk ability to determine if that's worth it to you (it probably is).

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
