I'm making a build for an upcoming game. The setting is going to be in Ravnica. My character will be in the Azorius Senate (for those who don't know, the Azorius Senate is your typical lawful neutral senate. Working for the law, the people and is against chaos). Every player are solo, max in group of two. We all play on different time and different factions. We might be in a squad but with NPC.
Classes that usually fits in the Azorius Senate: Bard, Cleric, Fighter, Paladin and Wizard.
Build (basic):-Race: Aasimar, Protector-Stats focused: Dex, Wis.-Classes: 1 Sorcerer Divine Soul (starter), 8 Cleric Order Domain, 11 Monk Sun Soul.
The issue i see (and the reason why i'm here) is that i wonder if i even need the monk class. I've realized that the ''Radiant Sun Bolt'' is cool, but why use that when i can use a cantrip that will be more effective.
So i'm at an impasse. The concept i've made was cool (to me) but pretty much useless, unless i'm missing something. Otherwise i don't know what other build to play, i'm out of inspiration.
I'm coming here to see if my build is better than what i gave it credit for and see what other ideas you guys might have.
First things first: If you're playing Ravnica, there's no Aasimar. Of course your DM might allow you to do it, but Ravnica has a pretty restrictive race list (Human, Elf, Centaur, Goblin, Loxodon, Minotaur, Simic Hybird, Vedalken).
Could you enlighten the concept first? What is it supposed to look like in our head? Because you're asking if the monk is needed, but you're taking 11 lvls in it. So tell us What you want to be able to do.
Specificaaly on the sun fist: you get to add dex to damage as well so a possible D4+5 damage (mutliple times because of extra attack and ki points and it scales with the monk table). Is gonna be better than most cantrips I guess.
Hard to base a build on just telling us which classes your grabbing.
Why do you start as a sorcerer? What is the 1 lvl for in general? Seeing as you're taking a lot of Cleric lvls as well and they share a spell list and I'm guessing your Cha won't be high anyway. won't the cleric's weapon/armour profs be handier? I know monk doesn't really need armour at the start, but there comes a point where armour is better than no armour.
First things first: If you're playing Ravnica, there's no Aasimar.
True but angels are a thing in Ravnica and Aasimar is the closest thinig i can use for this without breaking the game. So an offspring of angel/human was not too farfetch but it's rare. If an other player would have wanted it, it would have been a no for both, to avoid favoritism.
What is it supposed to look like in our head?
I don't even know myself. I wanted to use the cleric of order for the Enchantement side, Sorcerer was mostly for the CON save, monk was for DPS that i thought was lacking on Cleric. I'm exploring other idea like Warrior/cleric, sorcerer/paladin and such. To be honest, i lack the experience in this game to know what can mix well. I only have a general idea like avoid mixing two caster that use different ability modif.
That is why i'm here. I lack the knowledge on the matter, so i seek the council from those who might have it.
As I said, it's up to you and your DM to sort that out. Not sure how angels procreate in Ravnica 😂.
So you want to balance out cleric dps? Honestly Clerics do fine. Sure you don't have fireballs and such but you can pick up a few decent damage spells, and your melee damage gets boosted a bit because of your domain.
If you want a more offensive caster in plate, maybe fighter (eldritch knight) and som wizard lvls would work for you?. They share a casting stat so no awkard sorcere charisma with cleric wisdom there 🙂.
Maybe try order cleric with battle master fighter. Starting fighter will get you CON saves. You can get a fighting style, and extra attack if you go deep enough (not necessary). Still go mostly cleric and spiritual weapon and spirit guardians will boost your dps.
Well, you can always go safe - paladin 6/sorcerer 14. Crazy damage through two attacks and a ton of smiting power, heavy armor, crazy defenses and thematically safe.
if you want to be more of a caster, sorcerer 18/warlock2 for some of the better sustainable dps (eldritch blast with cha on each bolt+aquickened spell pretty much every round)
Both fit the child of angel stuff if you try. Celestial sorcerer subclass, and celestial warlock if you really want to go full holy angel.
these two should at least feel very powerful, but if they fit your concept I have no idea.
I would say that, if you're concerned about DPS as a Cleric, you'd be pretty safe going into the Domains of Light, Tempest, or War domains. All 3 of those have pack a significant punch.
I would ask, though, which group of Angels? Is the Angel parent part of the Boros Legion, a Firemane perhaps, or are they more of the Orzhov persuasion, extorting a favor for a favor? Depending on the nature of the relationship between the Aasimar child and the Angel parent (if such relationship exists) would absolutely color their perspective and outlook on the world, and how they choose to interact with it.
If you're going to favor a more Boros perspective, I'd go with Light or War domains. Tempest might also work, but it seems more focused on lightning rather than fire or light. Not as thematically appropriate. One of these would definitely be the line of reasoning you'd want to go with if you're trying to push out DPS, though.
Since you called out Azorious as interesting to you, in that direction you could favor a more control focused build, going for the Order or Knowledge domains. Order gives you suppressing options, Knowledge gives you know-your-enemy sort of things.
If you wanted to branch out into the moral grey area of an Orzhov angel, you could pursue the Death, Life, or Grave domains. Death gives you a lot of curse-like control effects, while Life does exactly what you think it does, dishing out spot healing all over the place. Grave would be more about manipulating the line between life and death as you see fit, to your benefit rather than that of the balance.
