We are going to do a royal rumble with our previous characters at lvl 20. As a bard I have a lot of options. Do I take WISH and use it for something like simulacrum or just take true polymorph and change into an ancient dragon?
True Polymorph into an ancient brass dragon and burrow underneath the arena. Wait an hour if you want to make it permanent.
You could wait until there's only one person left but that's kind of boring. Pop up to use your sleep breath which lasts 10 minutes. Grapple and burrow sleeping people under the ground and leave them there to suffocate.
Don't forget you don't die when you reach 0 HP even if it's permanent. You just turn back.
Counterpoint: expect to be Counterspelled and Dispelled to hell and back. Have a plan for what happens when your ninth-level spell doesn't witn the game for you automatically, and have a plan to make sure every other caster in your group doesn't win the game with theirs.
I would consider focusing more on what you can do with mid-level magic, in the fourth to sixth range. Dominate Person's going to be a game-winner, especially if there's a low Wisdom bruiser in your pool of opponents. Dominating your table's Grog Strongjaw and saying "Hey buddy! Do me a solid and beat up that guy, instead!" and using your game's barbarian as your weapon of choice against whichever other character scares you most is a big one. Even better is Dominating the high Intelligence, low Wisdom wizard (if your game has one) and getting him to cast his Wish spell the way you want him to, rather than having to save your own Counters or Dispels for dealing with it.
Same with any sort of summoning spell you can use. Any ally who's swinging at people other than you swings the action economy of the bout your way and improves your odds.

True, but Counterspell and Dispel Magic (assuming they are not cast with a 9th level slot) would require hitting a DC of 19 with most likely only a +5 to the roll. Not impossible, but it may take several tries to get it to stick. Also, assuming you must cast Counterspell before knowing what is being cast, you could play mind tricks on your opponents, perhaps baiting them to Counterspell cantrips or what-not. Finally, your could Counterspell their Counterspell.
You can start the combat off with a normal Polymorph into a burrowing creature to bait counter spells. If some are used on you, you only lost a Polymorph. If they do not, you go underground and cast in relative safety.

If it's perm, you die when you hit 0, only a dispel turns you back. I doubt you'd be able to keep away from everyone in a battle royale for 100 rounds anyway so the con saves will be a bigger issue to keep concentration.
Invulnerability is great if you don't have many casters going against you. Won't help if you get hypnotic pattern or some other mind control that they make you drop it. The enemy class makeup is huge in determining what you should use. Those can get real crazy real quick lol.

The duration becomes permanent, but you still transform back when you hit 0 HP. This has been confirmed by Crawford.
Burrowing is not good in a 1v1 match, but is very effective in a Battle Royale as long as you don't just hide the whole time (mostly because it's boring for everybody). I've seen it used and personally used it to great results in large arena fights against other players. Even when people build counters, that's resources they can't use against other opponents unless they are just doing the same thing as you.

What kind of suggestions do you all have?
Depends on who your opponents are.
How about Invulnerability? It will last 100 rounds, which is hopefully enough time to let everyone else weaken/slay each other.
