i think we should have the option to make them tiny, either as the racial size (like how we can choose the owl or rabbit-folk size) or give them a altered, racial "Enlarge/reduce", with it only letting them shrink themselves, but last longer, be (proficiency bonus) per (short or long) rest, not reduce damage, and/or not be concentration.
Cause really, when you think of a fairy, do you really think of something the size of a garden gnome or a goblin? I don't know about you, but when i think "Fairy" I think of a humanoid with butterfly wings that can fit in my palm and can use my finger as a body pillow. And not just because its more aerodynamic and scientifically probable. Sure, magic makes them fly, but that's not the point. If they can (Quote): "squeeze through a space as narrow as 1 inch wide" (Unquote), they should be tiny, or be able to become tiny at the very least.
All that said, given the fact WotC likes giveing players anything other then Med/small the same way valve likes makeing games with 3's in their title, l won't hold my breath. (looking at you goliths and centars, who should be large, and you too, half-life and portal)
Edit: Just homebrewed the Fairy. Here's what I did to their size: You can switch between being Tiny and Small as a bonus action. Your equipment changes size with you, and their stats do not change. In order to use the Fairy Flight and Fey Passage abilitys, your size must be tiny.
If its just aesthetics you're worried about... race writeups are the ones that say how tall or how much the average member of said race weighs... and Fairy doesn't really mention that in the write up. At all. So, I don't see any reason the player can't just decide that their fairy PC is 4 inches tall as justification for Fey Passage. Fey Passage lets you fit through some keyholes, so that's pretty small.
According to the devs, the game mechanically breaks down if you have any size other than Medium or Small permanently on. So, that's something we're never going to see in 5e. There's concerns about weapon sizes, damage, etc. So, officially, we're stuck with Small. But I fail to see why you can't flavor that in any way you want so long as you stick the mechanics of being Small.

This is precisely what I intend to do - you're tiny, but you're active enough within your space to occupy it, you use small weapon rules (even if you flavor it to be tinier/ just magically shrinking it down to fit your size) and even your carrying capacity and such is small size (flavored fey magic, IMO). When it comes to taking blows, you treat HP as the abstraction that it is and don't actually get squashed until you're low on HP and 'start failing to avoid damage from hits'
I'm just gonna rule that you go like mist to get through the hole and then reform, it won't be an ability they can hold more then the round it just gonna be a move and can't protect them in combat or they like do a little shadow-step or something that just gets them past the obstacle in question.
