I wasn't paying attention THAT deep into UAs but, other than weapons being visited due to masteries, I don't think ITEMS as a whole was visited yet. I am simply frustrated, I guess.
As it is, Item categories are grouped into mundane equipment as one big bag Armor, Potion, Ring, Rod, Staff, Wand, Weapon and Wondrous Item, also as another one big bag, but for magical stuff
Rings having their own standalone category, while Amulets are clumped together as Wondrous Item has probably made my eyes squint in confusion every time something similar has happened. If you want to simply homebrew an earring, sure it's easy, but then it's another Wondrous Item. It's probably just my MMO brain talking, but I wish they'd just introduce ACCESSORY as a category; or an item tag, since they're planning onn adding Class tags to spells.
We have Weapons, mostly catered to classes that do physical damage of some sort. But Rod, Staff, Wands are in a different standalone category because... they cast spells? They have unit charges to cast from a list of spells? A lof ot newer items being introduced have charges now, even Armors have charges. Arcane Focus says they can be Rod/Staff/Wand but also lists Crystal and Orb. There's like, 11 Orb items in DND only some of them explicately mentioned they can be used as a spellcasting focus. That Staff can be used as a quarterstaff is another can of worms, since you have to dig that ruling. Rods, ok maybe a club, Wands? ugh. Yes, they're not listed as part of Weapons, but maybe they could consolidate them as CASTING FOCUS as a category and not take up 3 instances if they're not meant to bonk sutff with by default.
Which brings us to... CONSUMEABLE items. There are Potions, that grants effects, and Scrolls that give spells or spell like effects, but also Potions that give spell stuff like Potion of Gaseaous Form. There are 5 Scrolls in what I can see here in DNDB, though you could say there's a spellscroll for every spell. Why are they sorted like this? The only difference is the medium they're stored in, we now have Mind Crystals as a magic item too.
Don't get me wrong, I like that Wonderous Item is a nice catch-all category, but I simply wish it was better sorted than THIS.
