My favorite race is probably the Owlfolk. I like that you can stop falling in midair, and you can cast Detect Magic. It's also cool that you are proficient in stealth.
Went with Owlfolk, and it got me wondering. I'm sure there's probably a DMs Guild product out there, but did any edition ever riff on Chaucer's "Parliament of Fowls" from Canterbury Tales? It was my favorite, because it's self consciously broken story.
Personally I went with Rabbit folk because I like the way they captured the speed of a wild rabbit, with Hare-Trigger and the Rabbit hop Mechanic to give them an advantage over similar predator species Races. :)
I picked Rabbitfolk because it's just a really solid mix of generally-useful abilities. Nothing gamebreaking, but their marquee features are basically half-strength versions of top-tier feats - initiative proficiency is half-strength Alert, and bunny hop is an unreliable Mobile. It's strong in a way that I'd love to have as a player, and wouldn't mind as a DM, which should really be the goal for any player-focused class feature.
I probably WOULD have picked Hobgoblins except that it looks like whoever designed it doesn't actually know how the Help action works. In combat, the only time you're likely to use Help is to offer advantage to an ally's attack... and when you do that, the target of the Help action is your opponent. That means that, as written, the Feywild Hobbo's help action is giving the benefits to a hostile target... unless you want to give your friends +10ft walking speed during a social encounter. If they fix it then it'll become my favorite, I love those innate support talents.
Fairies are OP. Removing the Humanoid tag is crazy strong at lower levels, flight with Hover means they literally never need to land and there's no way for enemies to bring them down to the ground aside from forced movement, and then there's some innate spellcasting on top of everything. Being able to squeeze through one-inch gaps could also be absurdly powerful depending on the player's creativity - why pick a lock when you can just limbo underneath the door? As-written, I'm not allowing them in my games. **** 'em.
Owlfolk aren't QUITE as strong as Fairies, but they're close. Innate flight is strong but not gamebreaking on its own (Aarakocra tend to get banned not because it's a flying speed, but because it's 50ft at level 1) and without Hover, any restraining/speed reduction effect drops them to the ground and makes them take falling damage... being able to avoid damage on a reaction Dex save is something I'd consider dropping for balance purposes, though. Ritual Detect Magic is a really cool, niche perk, Darkvision is always handy, and Stealth proficiency is just generally nice to have.
Also, the power creep is real. Meanwhile, Dragonborn...

The Owlfolk is my favorite of the new Fey races. I just really like more monstrous/animal races and owls are an awesome animal to make a race out of.

I just like the idea of a Fairy Swarm Ranger that uses .... fairy swarms. It makes me giggle.
