I'm thinking of going Swash 3 and Fathomless 7 because as we all know getting to level 20 rarely if ever happens. The character idea is a hexblood born from a Marid crime lord who didn't inherit any power aside from being able to alter his appearance slightly and hex people. He nearly drowns but an ancient aboleth like entity enters a pact with him "saving" him but at a cost. I plan to do pact of chain and my DM has an idea for a familiar that's similar to a garden snake sized Neolithid.
My question is for all you gamers, is there a way I can make a decent melee/dueling lock with this level distribution.
The roll I'm trying to fill is more of a skill monkey who can hold their own if we need to isolate a single enemy while the party takes care of some bigger creatures or hordes.
With some DM changing things around, I'm probably going with a scimitar/ rapier as my weapon, I'm not so much concerned about the damage die on my weapon since I plan on using GFB or BB, more concerned about theme. Also depending on the way the story progresses I'm not against changing classes/adding multiclasses if the DM is ok with it.
My thought with this combination is that I'd be able to give advantage with Swash or with flanking with the tentacle and be able to kite or hold down single targets.

The character has a lot of watery/sailory vibe with the drowning and fathomless. You could think about changing Pact of the Chain for Pact of the Tome with the Book of Ancient Secrets Invocation. This will allow you to still take Find Familiar and have amazing utility for your party with all the Ritual spells you can just add there during your ventures. But what is important, you can take three cantrips from any class, that count as Warlock spells for you. If you are not against it, you can use a Quarterstaff (maybe a paddle or a long fishing hook, one of those for whales) and use Shillelagh with it. Since it will be a Warlock spell, you will attack and damage with Charisma.
That's pretty cool idea, the only thing I'm worried about is would I not be sacrificing my sneak attack possibility? I mean it will only be 2d6 extra damage.
The tome and whalers harpoon idea is very cool though, I may look into that, would you then maybe like instead of rogue, take 3 in fighter or something? Cause if it fits the theme I'm ok with not going rogue, as long as I can stay on theme and be able to hold an enemy
I mean, you wouldn't be losing on sneak attack. As long as your familiar is within 5ft of the enemy you are fighting, you get to use your 2d6. Even if its coiled around your shoulders or somewhere on your person. As per RAW, it is a creature and fulfills the "if another enemy of the target" for you to trigger the additional dice. Swashbuckler does describe itself as "master of the blade" but also "a pirate". None of the early abilities require a rapier or scimitar. So I imagine you could use it with a quarterstaff or a club (belaying pin from a ship) without much of an issue.
You would lose sneak attack because it requires the finest property on the weapon, or ranged weapon attack.
But anyways, if you just want to be a skill monkey that does decent combat damage, you do that just fine with booming blade+ sneak attack. Is there a reason you want high warlock levels?
I would do the reverse and do swashbuckler 7 fathomless 3. You get more expertise, and more sneak damage. I'd focus primarily on DEX, which works out because if I start with a 17 in dex, picking up moderately armored bumps me up to 18 while augmenting that cool melee capability.
That's a good idea. The way I was talking with my DM I'm for sure going to get at least 3 in warlock and rogue but that might not be a bad idea, going more rogue than warlock. For story purposes I was looking more towards warlock but I'll keep this in mind.
I was also looking at battlemaster fighter for a possible multiclass, so it'd end up looking like BM Fighter 3 and warlock X or vice versa. Wondering how that might help with what I want to do, cause I think maneuvers would be pretty nice like trip attack or disarming strike, could keep the pirate motiff and focus on debilitating as opposed to just damaging enemies.
