So I'm considering making a Warlock with the Fiend Patron, and I want to have it so the details of the pact include a dark/heavy price to use spells and so my Warlock tries to exploit a loophole by just using cantrips.
But my problem is that I don't know what the price for using a non cantrip spell would be, any thoughts?
Oh, and to negate the low DPS I plan on taking three levels of Sorcerer and just quickening EB.
Do you want the character to have to pay the price, or just know there are consequences? And will the price be paid immediately, or some time down the road?
Some ideas:
(Price paid later) when the character dies the patron gets their soul for x number of years, x being total number of spell slots spent while alive.
(Price paid immediately) Character must save CON DC 10 each time they use a spell slot. On fail gain a level of exhaustion.
(Price not paid by PC) Each time a spell slot is used the patron is allowed to torture the soul of a kitten (or whatever)
You can also go a bit abstract where the price has more RP consequences than mechanical consequences as well. Currently my Feylock has to engage regularly in debauchery and then her Fey Patron gets to extract the memory of the moment of climax. As a result, she doesn't always fully remember who she has slept with which is leading to sometimes sad and sometimes hilarious hi-jinx with NPC's lol.
I was thinking along the lines of an RP type consequence that must be paid shortly afterwards, my initial thought was for every spell slot used my character would have to end someone else's life, but that could end up very badly if I have to use multiple spell slots in a short time span.
But I do like @Mael's idea for someone aside from the PC pays the price, like if the Fiend strokes someone dead whenever a spell slot is used, although that would probably be giving the Patron too much power.
I was also planning on selecting a lot of spells for either protection or escape, such as: Expeditious Retreat, Feather Fall, Shield, etc. Although Feather Fall definitely has the most potential cause my character would have to quickly decide if helping his comrades is the worth paying the price.

As a fiendlock whos patron is Graz`zt, this could work for me as well!
