So I purchased the spell book for Blade Ward and Friends for my Verdan Warlock.
Though I can't seem to find the spells to add to the character, it just seems like all spell in the Players Handbook (for which i purchased the spellbook from) aren't popping up.
Nope, they should be there. Are you seeing any other spells? That said, I'd personally recommend against selecting Blade Ward. IMO, that's one of the worst cantrips in the game.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

I found it. I didn't realize Critical Role was turned off for the character.
Also, I've been looking for one for defense. Is there a much better option?
Not really. The problem with blade ward is it eats up a FULL action to only reduce the melee damage you take by half. Shocking grasp (so you can move away without provoking) would be my usual recommendation, but warlocks don't get it.
The closest thing to a "defensive" cantrip that I think is worthy would be Frostbite. You can use that in melee because it's a save based spell, and if you stick it, the next melee attack that creature makes has disadvantage. That would allow you to move away from the creature (which provokes an attack, but it would be at disadvantage). if you don't move away, his next attack will still be at disadvantage...assuming he doesn't make his save.
If something rolled up on me, I'd frostbite it then move to a location near an ally, preferably a position where if the monster follows you, it will provoke an opportunity attack from your ally.

Yeah, the only character I have that actually uses blade ward effectively, is my eldritch knight, and that's cause he can at use it then still make one attack . Unless there is a way to use blade ward in a similar manner as this, it feels lack luster imo.

I was able to add Shocking Grasp on my Pact of the Tome. Mistakenly had 2 Eldritich Blast (1 from spells, 1 from book).
If you plan to multi-class with Sorcercer later, Blade Ward might be worth it eventually once you can Quicken cast it, but that would basically be if you wanted a melee build. It certainly isn't something to pick up just yet.
Most people don't think of it as a defensive cantrip, but with a non-illusion-nerfing DM, Minor Illusion has all kinds of defensive and utility uses to it. Very useful vs. low Intelligence monsters and NPCs.
Minor Illusion can function defensively in ranged combat; create the illusion of a 5 ft x 5ft wall (or other obstacle) in front of your character, and take cover behind it.

Is there a prerequisite I'm missing?
