With this update you can now add any creature stat block to your character sheet in the new 'Creatures' section!
Since launch, we've seen players come up with many creative ways to reference monsters that were relevant to their character within the digital sheet. We've now made it much easier to add creatures to your sheet that puts all of the detailed DDB monster information at your fingertips, in addition to updating the monster stat block information automatically when game rules would affect them. This means adding creatures to wildshape, beast companion and familiar groups will directly influence the monster stat block to help you understand how to utilize the creature to its full potential.
We added ways to interact with your creatures such as being able to customize and track hit points.
Another system we are implementing with this update is "creature rules". Every class feature, racial trait, and feat can possess these rules, and you can use them in your own homebrew creations. Every rule that is added contributes to what monsters are available to add to a specific creature group. Creature rules are how we describe to the wildshape creature group that you can add "beasts of 1/4 CR or lower that can't have flying or swimming speeds". The rules for each group will always add to the available list. This means that if you had a rule of "beasts" and a rule of "max 1 CR" , your final list would have all monsters that are max 1 CR or any monster that is a beast which could have a CR well above 1. We did add an "escape hatch" to following these rules. If any creature group has rules, they will have a checkbox that says "Filter Using <groupName> Rules" and can be unchecked to open the list to all the monsters that are available to you.
Please note that the Creatures section is intended as an easy-to-access reference - the idea is not to have full-blown temporary effects change your character sheet yet. I'll let BadEye share more on that kind of functionality when the time is right.
We are also aware that while wildshape is working fully as intended, the ranger's companion and familiar do not yet have any adjustments in the "Actions" sections of their stat block due to the way Actions are currently stored. As we begin development on the upcoming encounter/ monster builders, that data will be parsed and we will be able to manipulate it better in the Creatures section. In the meantime, we provide feature callouts to remind players of the ranger's proficiency bonus or the fact that a familiar can't attack.
We know this update has been eagerly-awaited, and this is just the starting point. As always, share your feedback in the forums and we will continue to improve the new Creatures section over time.
Thanks!
Many many thanks! I wont clog my inventory with items renamed as animals! Yay!
This was the update I didn't know I needed.
Nice!! Could this be added to the PDF export, too? Makes it so much easier to quickly reference regular Wildshapes!
Please consider adding a filter for "creature type" since a beast companion of type Aarakocra doesn't make much sense. I have several spells that are for "beasts" that I'd like to look through them and their stats. Other than that I really love the creature menu. Keep up the great work!
But How do I add a homebrew creature to my character?
Create the creature in home brew then add it to your character
The creatures tab does not show up on my character sheet. I am a Pact of the Chains Warlock....
Any idea why? Do I have to buy it?
They renamed creatures "extras". I think pact of the chain would be a familiar. Someone with more familiarity with warlocks can hopefully confirm.
Nm familiars can't attack. Maybe it's summoned?
That was it! Perfect, thank you. Had no idea they renamed it and just overlooked "extras" completely.
Yeah, it was done around the time of the release of Saltmarsh so it would also cover vehicles.
I don't see that option on my sheet. Just says "extras"
The Creatures option was replaced with Extras when Vehicle support was introduced.
Is the update out because im not seeing it on any character sheets
It would be great if at some point in the future, this shows under a different tab than "extras" so it shows up with all your actions. As well as a option to say whether or not the creature will have a turn in combat, and the combat tracker automatically enters it in. Amazing feature so glad it was added.
Does this not work on android?
