Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 17, 2020
Additions: As much as we love our fearless leader and our designer's cat Zummo, we have removed Happy Adam and Bob Ross Adam from the Combatant avatar fallback images and replaced them with something more generic and familiar.
Fixes: The old text color for initiatives on friendly and enemy combatants had the appearance of being inactive, so we improved initiative contrast and darkened some color so it is less confusing.
Combat Tracker ALPHA UPDATE Mar 10, 2020
Additions:Hit Point Widget added: We all know that most D&D Players don't particularly care for doing math while they tell their story, so we have implemented a HP adjustment widget to help you add and subtract Hit Points.
Now when you "click" on monster stat block links (tooltips) it will open in a new tab preventing your Combat from loosing all of it's progress.
We have been using the Combat Tracker in our home games for a few weeks, and although it is certainly not in a finished state yet, we experienced enough value that we have decided to go ahead and release it now - even in its unfinished state - to both 1) let subscribers gain some of that value and 2) get feedback as early as possible.
Please keep in mind that this is not a finished product, and we invite subscribers to help us make it the best it can be!
Who can use the Combat Tracker?
All D&D Beyond Subscribers. The Combat Tracker is in full active development right now. We will be allowing early access to NEW Combat Tracker features to our Subscribers first, to prove out concepts and new functionality. We took the same approach with the Alpha version of the Encounter Builder with much success. This delivery method allows us to digest feedback in bite sized chunks and perform testing to figure out the best user experience possible.
What is a Development Alpha?
The Development Alpha of the Combat Tracker allows us to test features and user experience.
-
Functional but expecting a lot of bugs
-
Should be no core functionality bugs
-
Core functionality could change with feedback
-
Functionality could appear or disappear at any time
We will be working on validating bug reports and cleaning up the Combat Tracker. Once these tasks have been completed we will release to Beta, essentially meaning the Combat Tracker tool is complete.
Please leave Feedback here
Something I really think would be helpful is if Lair Actions auto-populated on their own line on the tracker, almost like a notification that you could expand or read on hover/click. To customize that, you could manually change their initiative count, drag them down the order, and/or delete them.
I think stuff like this makes running Epic encounters more manageable.
Great work so far!!
I have taken a look and I can not see the Combat Tracker under anything. Please advise
I think we're in agreement here, this ALPHA version doesn't really support everything yet...
But to support the breaking of ties, the devs will need to give us a way to manually re-organize the initiative order (based on user decisions).
Whether that be the players decide who among them goes first, or the DM decides the order, or optionally they've done a roll-off!
Go to the Encounter Builder (under tools). If you have built any encounters, you should see a "Run" button to the right of the other encounter info in the list view of your encounters. If you have "opened" a specific encounter, the button is at the very bottom (you will likely have to scroll down to find it). This presumes you have a subscription, as the alpha is currently subscribers only.
I have "D&D Beyond Master Annually" and I have looked and it is not showing up. I have even logged out and back in and still does not show. any ideas?
I think it would be easier to just have a field were I can put in -17 and click apply same if I healed a NPC +17 and click apply no math needed.
I would like to see a fly out window on the right side of the screen when you click on a player/creature (just like when you click a spell and a description slides out). In this slide-out you can keep track of conditions etc for that object. Also each condition can have an icon that would appear under the name really so I dont have to keep pulling up the side menu.
Maybe a quick note for that one object as well that isn't covered in the conditions. Also have something like a check box for special things like "has advantage on next roll"
I used the combat tracker for the first time last night at our table. I see so much potential here...but overall, thank you!.
I realize a lot of functionality is coming down the line in the future, so I'm going to limit this right now to what I noticed:
-When you hit "next" a monster that is reduced to 0 hit points should perhaps be skipped
When I "add" a monster into the combat tracker of my own making, it would be great if the encounter would save it. Or, better yet, if I could add the homegrown monster in the encounter builder to begin with...am I just missing where that's possible?

I'm wondering if there's a way, with the current build, to add PCs mid-encounter? As it is, I don't see any way to do it apart from Manual Entry, unless you want to start the encounter over from the top.
Would be nice to be able to choose how to differentiate between same monsters. I've monsters figures with 1,2,3 etc not a,b,c etc. and on the fly can't remember which number letter of the alphabet H is, for example.
I like what I'm seeing so far. Looking forward to being able to input my players character info into the player character A,B,C sections. But for testing out this works fine. Can't wait to see what improvements you add.
Loving the encounter builder so far! One thing that came up today while testing this out with my group was that it would be really useful to have an option to place non-monster items in the initiative order. The specific use case I'm thinking of is lair actions. If there were a way to put a lair actions reminder at 20 in the initiative tracker, that would be amazing!
But the character have to be joined to that campaign. Seems strange that you cant just pick characters from your own list of characters?
I wonder if they will add something like loot tables for when players go to look at the bodies and stuff after the encounter.
In a usual scenario, the DM creates the encounters and the players own the characters, so listing the DM's characters would be more strange. However if your characters are added to a campaign you select for the encounter, they are added to the encounter.
Loot tables are not RAW as they were in previous editions; as a DM it's your decision what loot to leave, and the encounter summary has a specific Treasure & Rewards section for you to make note of these.
Hi,
Please allow us to change the image and the Name on the encounter pages for combatants
Would be great to see conditions as well!
