it should be a part of character creation that has a customizable character model that lets you pick from race, class, and sex while adjusting height/whieght. It shows what the character wears and what items that they hold. You should be able to rotate your character model and select a cool background behind the model based on where your character is in the campaign. You should be able to click on items to show what stats they have and if your character wears a backpack what items are in the backpack. This character would great reference to what you character actually looks like. Just a thought for dnd beyond.
Be interesting if they could port something in that's similar to what we see in the Neverwinter online RPG during character creation. We might be wish listing with this, but would be a nice addition if it could be done.
Creating 3D models of your characters seems like its own complicated project. Especially if you want to hook in up to a 3D printer and make it as customizable as you would like.
2D generation would be pretty cool though. Even something simple to create simple portraits for my character would be awesome. Allow artists to submit character packs that allow you to customize appropriately (halfling pack, dragonborn pack, South Park pack, etc...)
I rather like the 2D option with artists being able to submit their own ideas to the pool of choices. Of course, there are thousands of pics on the internet. We even managed to find a green cat person that fit how my character mostly looks as she chooses in a homebrew that has different types of primordial and animal beings you can play.
And having seen MMO/MOBA creation, I think the 3D idea is pushing it and as others have said there are other things out there to do it with. Not sure if it is worth WotC's time at this point. Though when 3D printing is more viable there could be options for them to look at if they so chose. Even so, there are so many games out there with generic fantasy characters in there, it would probably be a competition of who has the best way to make your 3D printed models.

I love this idea. Even if it's something really simple it would be a great feature.
Yeah and why not add the code to download it to a 3D printer so you can make your perfect mini??
<Sarcasm end>
Can't wait to try the character creator.
Do you have any idea how huge a project that would be?
Besides, Hero Forge already do something like it.
