I would like to see filtered/interactive spell lists for creating spell casting characters. for example If you choose Wizard class then all druid spells are removed from a list. Also if playing a subclass like Eldritch Knight having an interactive list which allowed you to pick any wizard spell then limited the remaining 2 too only the correct schools and spell levels. I spent a lot of time reading neat spells only to find my fighter couldn't cast them cause they were of the wrong school.
Hmm.... This makes me wonder whether we should be expecting a character sheet or a character manager. Subtle difference, but a character manager, IMO, would be "bigger" and more app-like, potentially with wizards for picking spells, etc. Since the character info would be stored in some sort of database, you could pull it into any variety of sheets and even switch things up, for presentation. A character sheet, on the other hand would be fairly set in presentation, once chosen, and more about just filling in the blanks with some auto-calculation with minor filtering/wizard-lings.
Personally, I'm hoping for more of a character manager. I don't really need another sheet, and I sure wouldn't pay much for it. Either integrate it with Compendium data or forget it.

Since character sheets became digital the line between a character sheet and a character manager has blurred a lot. I think I would prefer to keep some distinction... to me the character sheet should focus on being an easy way to see what you need at the table. Even the static character sheets from 3E started including how stats were derived, rather than just giving the AC or skill modifier, we saw a long formula of how it was calculated (10 + Armor bonus + shield bonus + Dex mod + size mod + natural armor + etc.). In a lot of ways I think less is more on a character sheet.
An app has the benefit of being able to be both. You can have a play mode and a build mode. You see only what you need while playing, and if you need to see where you go a particular bonus (which comes up less in 5E), you just go to the build mode to check. My hope is that in the final format, everything you really need while be available at a glance, without much navigation, but you can drill down to see anything you need via popups, tool tips, links, etc.
@Osgood. I absolutely agree. I guess I see three parts to what I want:
1) Character Manager (Builder) -- Optimized for creating and updating the character between sessions. Integrates well with the Compendium for creating/advancing characters and other options that don't typically happen in real time.
2) Character Sheet -- Provides ways to skin/format static/printable content for use at the table, with pencil -- or some equivalent. Focus on presentation and content consumption. Integration with Compendium is really just about getting necessary info on the sheet. Bonus points for ability to print off spell cards and the like.
3) Character Tracker -- Digital interactive character sheet for use on a device at the table. Integration with Compendium is mainly around quick reference pop-ups about keywords and abilities your character can use. Lightweight, wizards for things like managing hit points, rolling attacks (optional, I know I like the feel of dice), preparing spells, etc. True maturity only comes by integrating with a Adventure/Encounter Tracker tool for the DM.
I think they are going on the side of manager and that should allow us to pick and choose how simple to how complex a sheet should be for use at the table including what to print or not print for the session. People have already stated they want links to information so they can see it on the sheet, but click on it for pop-up information. I totally understand want a simple thing to look at while playing as most of us can figure out quite a few things without the whole formula being there. Like one of the basic fill in PDF sheets has almost all the info you need to play on page one. Casters will need the page listing spells for quick check and tracking.
Because it is all digital I foresee it being modular and allowing us a combo of ways to do things based on whether it is for quick use for game time or more laid out to verify all the building.

It would be nice for an animal companion section to be added on the sheet directly. Right now you have to keep a separate sheet for your animal companion.
So not sure if this has been said yet, but from what i have read I agree with everything so far lots of customizable options for the sheet its self, but also as a dm being able to send an item directly to a players sheet would be nice. By this i mean i pull a tooltip info on a generated item and then as a dm linked to that players sheet, i drag and drop the the item to their sheet which is then updated for them with the requisite information on the item. also be able to buff/debuff my players depending on the situation automatically.
As to some of the as a player options i have been using the MPMB sheet and love that when i level up i get a message on things that need to be updated or that can be. but also some things are automatic for the class/race and would be great if the sheets as a optional auto fill would be nice.

This would also be amazing for swapping items between party members. Maybe little icons of the other players in your party, and the ability to simply drag and drop an item on that icon to give that player the item
In the meantime, while we are waiting for this amazing tool, have you tried this fully automated character sheet from the dms guild that will allow you to add wild shapes? http://www.dmsguild.com/m/product/186823
I am hoping to Multiclass in my current group. I was hoping that Multiclassing would be intuitive and easy. I don't know what that would look like, but that would be really useful.

- What would be awesome for the character sheet would be the ability to track usage of class features between short and long rests. As class features get used they become locked out on the character sheet. A button for short/long rest would then resest the sheet and open access to the features again.
- Having an inventory page similar to what you would find in a video game like Baldur's Gate would be great. It could automatically track encumberance, item location, indicate item usabiltiy, etc.
- Active Effect tracker: Make it easy to track active effects like poisioning or curses. If an active effect impacts abilities scores, saves, movement, etc., it would automatically make the adjustments on the sheet. Deleting the effect resets the sheet. Also highlight active effects so players don't forget that they are there.
- Incorporate an optional feature allowing Players to track faction status and all other optional player rules. For example with Sanity it would allow you to add the Sanity ability score and track incurred madnesses. The effects of any madnesses would automatically be tracked on the character sheet. The character sheet could easily be reset to normal by simple deleting the madness when and if cured.
In regards to a digital character sheet you use during play - I would like to have the option for touch or pen input and auto-calculation in fields that require numbers to change all the time. Example: Hit Points. I would like to simply write inside the HP field with my finger or stylus "-10" and have it automatically reduce my hit points by 10. Likewise, scrawling "+10" would increase my HP by 10.
One more idea: This is for Homebrew games - The ability to incorporate homebrew class features. For example I'm running a Cthulhu-esque game and I have a wizard class feature I've created based on the Hound of Tindalos that allows the wizard to basically Misty-Step through angles in the environment as a bonus action. It would be great to have a homebrew class feature generator (basically a series of drop down menus perhaps) that would allow you custom create and incorporate abilities like this.

yeah I too think that that would be a game changer if they could merge the convenience of digital with the natural feel of writing with pen and paper. Not only being able to just write "-10" on your hp and have it automatically calculate but also being to to just write "shortsword" in your inventory list and then be able to click on that entry to open the description and attributes of a shortsword.

I mean... would I like that? Sure that sounds super cool, but stuff like that is going to naturally drive up the price point, and I don't want the program to have so many super cool "bells and whistles" that it ends up being out of reach of my pocket book. Maybe things like that could be part of higher tier subscription rates, and for those of us that are frugal/cheap a digital version that does everything we need without all the bells and whistles would be available.
I would like a share button or some way to share my sheet with the DM or other players while fleshing out my character for the next campaign since we can't always have a session 0.

Of course. Not to mention not all players are going to have access to Surfaces, Ipad pros, or other stylus tablets. If those sort of bells and whistles ever come it will be down the road, though those are the sort of things I would willingly pay more for considering that a lot of the current options out there are often clunky and poorly designed
I've started playing casters a lot and was hoping to see a seamless addition of spells to your character sheet with a hover over description or something. Just a way to quick reference the spells (or even abilities for other classes) that I have at my disposal.
