This class was a conversion from a homebrew 3.5 class I created for one of my campaigns, and was based on the Dragoon/Lancer class from the Final Fantasy series.
Originally the bonus damage for Lunge Attacks was based on the result of a Jump skill check. The distance jumped was calculated and then the attack did extra damage in the form of falling damage to both the enemy and the character. The Lancer could reduce the damage with a successful Tumble check and throughout the levels would gain abilities to reduce falling damage (some of this was changed around and adapted in the “Friend of the Sky” ability). Once I started to convert it, I tried to get away from the Final Fantasy aspect of the jump attack and tried to make it feel more like a lunge or a charge attack. Since it’s a martial class, I wanted it to have more of a realistic feel (as realistic as D&D can be anyway). The Legionnaire archetype is kind of a throwback to the Warlord class from 4e. I liked the idea of a warrior that defends and inspires his or her troops. And historically the Roman Legionnaire did just that, leading his troops into battle, often times with a pilum and shield. I also like the idea of a spear and shield, because the other martial classes always do sword/axe/mace and shield if they are going to go defensive, but nobody ever does spear and shield. The Dragoon archetype is a nod to the original reason for making this class in the first place. I wanted something that was totally offensive-based, since the Legionnaire is clearly defensive-based. In 4e my wife had played a Beast Master Ranger and had loved it, but complained that she couldn’t have a dragon for a pet. So I looked into converting the pseudodragon. When I finally got around to creating this class, I noticed again that the Beast Master Ranger couldn’t have a dragon-type pet, and since I needed an archetype I figured, “why not have dragoons honor/worship dragons?” So, I looked at the Beast Master Ranger, made a few improvements to the pseudodragon (including giving it a brass dragon’s breath weapons at higher level) and ran with it. It wasn’t until after this that I remembered that Final Fantasy 11’s dragoon class had a pet dragon as well. So, what started as a nod, seems like a blatant rip-off (oh well).
It is a Pay What You Want product, meaning you can give me nothing or anything for it, but I'm more interested in what people think about the class and the two archetypes. I'm excited by the interest I've gotten in this so far and hope to someday have my creation be in one of your campaigns.
“It is a better world. A place where we are responsible for our actions, where we can be kind to one another because we want to and because it is the right thing to do instead of being frightened into behaving by the threat of divine punishment.” ― Oramis, Eldest by Christopher Paolini.

Updated: Added a new path (archetype) known as the Vellalar, a more studious/religious lancer who uses knowledge of ancient/legendary spears to adapts and empower the lunge attacks in ways resembling some of the most famous spears in mythology.
