I thought of an idea for a mage/sorcerer/warlock/druid class that is based on placing spells on a weapon to essentially buff the weapon they're using i.e creating a flaming sword to fight an enemy that is weak to fire.
Is this possible, how would that work and which class would be best.
The Elemental Weapon spell will do what you want. Hexblade Warlock with Pact of the Blade will probably work best for what you're trying to do, though a Forge Cleric could also work well if you're looking to be in more of a support role.
If you wanted to do it without a spell or class feature, a creative way might be to coat your blade in oil and set it alight as an action. Perhaps it'd give you one or two attacks with a little fire damage - 1d6 for example. Chat with your DM about what might be possible - there's nothing RAW on this.
If you wanted something consistent and built into your class, or you're absolutely set on it being magic that does it, then InquistiveCoder's advice is spot on.
The best class for buffs on weapons and armor is artificer. It's an Eberron specific class that has had 2 different playtest versions in 5e. The first was a wizard subclass that was terrible, the second is a stand alone class that is better, but not quite the same flavor as the 3.5 version. WotC has announced on Twitter that there will be another pass at it within the next month and it will eventually be in WGtE.
