This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Welcome!
If you are reading this, then congratulations, you are in the game. Here is a quick background of the world, what you need to know, and some basic world information for your characters to work with.
Kosmedes
While every race has its own name for the world, and debated among themselves when forming the common language, eventually the council decided on Kosmedes. A phonetic jumble of a Gnomish word and a Human word, it translates literally as "Universe Home" but its implication is that, of the black mystery space and the twinkling wonder of the stars, this place is home to all that is known. Every race, creature, and plant, both known and not yet known share one thing. Kosmedes.
There are 6 continents, separated by vast oceans on one shore, and a wide, uncrossable river on the other. The continents are actually not very far from each other, but no one has ever crossed the mighty river. It is bitterly referred to simply as The Divide. In the north western hemisphere there is the continent Eshaiya, home of the Elven capital of Ralohice. The country is heavily wooded, with dense green forests filling the land from coast to coast. In the south western hemisphere is the continent Horrik, a volcanic and mountainous area, home to the dwarven capital Baldom. In the north eastern hemisphere are two continents, which many refer to as the twins. These continents are nearly identical in shape and size. The first is Vorcoran, a continent of rolling hills, green grass, and exotic flora, the Gnome capital of Farfiz sits on the southern shore, while the halfling capital of Gosire sits on the nothern shore. The other half of the twins is Ersa, the ancient home to humans, it is sparse, and mostly vacant now, inhabited mostly by artifact hunters, farmers, and those who wish to live 'off the beaten path' so to say. It's landscape is wooded in the east, and becomes more jagged as you travel east toward the Great Divide. The south western hemisphere houses the continent Dugvag, home to all unholy and unnatural thing. Orcs, and goblins, and all manner of horrible creature reside there. It is unknown whether or not they have made a capital or a government for they do not communicate with the outside world often, and the outside world does not communicate with them often. In the center of the vast oceans sits a small island continent, it is perfectly circular and sits in one of the only calm stretches of sea, it is Vasesci, and the entire island is the human capital Paolo. It takes full advantage of it's position in the world, and serves as the only port along a treacherous journey. They charge outrageous fees for goods coming in and going out, and in turn have built a nation of opulence. To live in Paolo you must be very wealthy. It is the reason the humans abandoned the island of Ersa, everyone wanted to get rich quick. The continents are fairly diverse, full of many different races, however; once every 3 years, everyone is ordered to go back to their home capitals for a census. Even those who were born abroad and have never seen their races' capital, must make the trek back to pay their dues and be counted.
Religion
Every nation has its own God, they are all monotheistic, without much argument between each other. The dwarfs have Kleggar the Creator, the gnomes have the Great Corni, the halflings have Terin, the humans refer to their god simply as The Creator, and the elves have Yalasna the Divine. These nations believe that in divinity and creation their deity acts alone, but that they have chosen champions through time and often the races have erected temples in their name and worshiped them like demigods.
Politics and World Events
The world politics have been civil since the great council made the common language and the treaty of lasting peace. It has been so long since the last quarrel that even prejudice exists almost solely in the minds of the oldest elders. Aside from the humans taking advantage of their position in Vaseci to profit wildly, there is not really any inter-political struggle. The persistent threat of Orc invasion keeps the nations on guard, and keeps armies assembled.
Homebrew and Misc. Information
There are a few things that we will be doing that is slightly different than regular DnD;
Group initiative; Since it is impossible to keep a good initiative tracker in a play by post setting, I will roll all initiatives using the highest modifier from the party. The winning party of the initiative will then take their turn before the next group for example; if you have a halfling rogue in the group with a +4 initiative and you encounter a band of Goblins, and their highest modifier is a +1 it would look like this:
1d20+4 = 24
1d20+1 = 4
Now, as I'm typing this I cannot see the results, its just a line of code. If you look in the top right corner of the text field there is a Die with 3 dots, if you click that it will ask you what type of die you wish to roll and with what modifier. You just fill in the blanks and it will automatically generate the number once you push post.
Inspiration; Since we can't communicate in real time, inspiration needs to be announced before you roll. It becomes too difficult to keep track of everything if we are pushing the rewind button all the time.
Spoilers; When you're posting, if you wish to share any out of character information use the spoiler button. It is the exclamation point on the tool bar of the text field, once you push it, it will generate a spoiler text field, simply write what you wish to write and then once it's time to post, it will make a nice little tab like this;
This is also where you will post your dice roll and action text.
PbP turn example; PbP is a unique venue for DnD, you have a lot of time to think between turns, and have the ability to make it read more like a story than an in-person game. Your posts can be long and full of flavor text, or they can be short and simple. Here is an example of a turn;
"Orryn sees the wolf in the distance and feels his heart pounding in his chest. He grabs an arrow from the leather quiver on his back and takes aim..."
Orryn attacks the wolf with his short bow;
1d20+3 to hit = 17
1d6+2 damage if it hits = 4
If you have any questions please let me know so I can clarify!
We will launch the in character thread tomorrow and get the game started!
Hey, all! I'm Mike and I'll be RPing as Grimnir the Walker.
I'm an M.A. candidate in Scandinavian history (specializing in the Eastern Norse: specifically their culture and commerce during the Viking Age) by day and an avid lover of all things fantasy/sci-fi related in what little spare time I usually have. I write, professionally (and prolifically), so I will always have plenty to add to the mix. My experience in D&D is limited to having watched a game being played briefly at a game shop many miles from my tiny. ultra-conservative borough and several years spent playing pc-format knockoffs and successors such as WoW, Neverwinter Nights, Neverwinter, etc.
My character will be your typical barbarian with a bit of flair. His nickname is related to an actual historical figure from medieval Denmark/Normandy and will be something fun for everyone to laugh at.
I really look forward to getting deep into this campaign with the rest of you. It looks to be a well thought out and engaging set up.
Best,
- M.

5e is pretty simple, especially compared to 3.5 or ADnD.
A good reference could be podcasts. I learned the basics by listening to podcasts like Sneak Attack! The Indoorsmen And the Adventure Zone (though not the best representation of the rules haha)
I'm Brandon. I watch too much tv (until I start back to grad school this fall). I love a good 90's show and fantasy/scifi, as well. Doctor Who, Warehouse 13, Buffy & Angel being some of my favorites. My D&D experience is lacking. My intrigue was first piqued when I saw the Community episodes with D&D. But just found a group of friends about to start playing and was able to hop in the week we started. So, I've only played one session live and have created way too many characters, pouring over the PHB, in the last several weeks.
I'll be playing Varis Xiloscient an elf cleric. I'll probably be updating my background a wee bit to best fit him into Kosmedes.
I am not going to worry about tracking components. Unless you really want your character to be into them, in which case I would offer maybe some incentive, but, I just assume a magical wizard can plan ahead, haha.
Also, if you have any OC questions during the game feel free to post them here. We will all get the notification and it will help keep the IC thread linear.
Now that the game has started you are free to role play it however you want. I like to give you quite a bit of freedom. So feel free to explore your character, role play with each other, or just rest until morning. The choice is always yours.
I am excited to get started. It seems like we have a really fun group. This should be a blast!
NP about components most of my old time DM's drummed it into us about components and items so we were not pulling things out of our butts so when in doubt I am one to err on the side of caution and be prepared but your way/style works for me :)
I think at least I did better with my latest post with doing a spoiler and the roll... as things progress I will get better and in the swing of things. So far I am having a blast!!! Just do keep in mind some things I remember others I draw a blank or get confused old edition rules with 5e so I am trying to check myself but if I fumble please let me know so I can learn and correct... thank you!
@Bad_Bartigan Yes sure threw me into a tailspin with the opening at least my last post now I know that Guido addressing the muscular fellow is your barbarian... :) I think the pair may make a good team kind of like Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser if you are familiar with the books with those characters not sure if the names are exactly spelled right been years and years oh my...
I was thinking that same thing when I read what you had seen from your perception roll but I didn't want to assume, hahaha. I agree, though. When I laboured over which character class to choose, I knew that I'd have to play to my strengths. In choosing barbarian I knew I'd be hamstringing myself in terms of magic. Maybe we'll get lucky and play off of one another's strengths and weaknesses like you said. I've nearly always been "the big guy" or "tank" in everything I've ever done. Art imitates life, I suppose. I'm a 6'5" 260 lbs barbarian irl too, hahaha. Those Swedish genes gave me everything but the blonde hair...
I'm not familiar with Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, but after having looked at the wikipedia article, I may have to look into it now. I just found a 1978 edition of Tolkien's complete works today at a thrift store that I can't wait to jump into.

The stories are old and a little outdated but they are classic pulp fiction fantasy type reads like Robert E. Howard's Conan but less known but really for gamers the pulps can be very helpful and assist in fueling the imagination as well as provide inspiration.
