I have a player that will have a 50’x30’ tapestry falling on him (cloud giant casting telekinesis). Thought about Dex save, but the tapestry covers such a big area so I’m leaning towards a strength save to resist being restrained by the cloth. What would I contest his strength save vs? Giant’s Spellcasting attack?
If the tapestry is merely falling on him, and not being "held in place" by the giant's telekinesis, then probably a rather low DC (it's cloth, after all), maybe somewhere between 10 and 15, depending on how thick and resilient the cloth is. If it's being "held in place" by the giant, then yeah, probably the giant's spell save DC.
Dex save first, a slightly higher DC around an 18 or so to see if they can scramble out of the way. This way there's the slim chance they just get knocked prone at the edge of the tapestry.
If they fail you can play with how much is covering them. If they fail then you have the Str to crawl out from under it, moving at half speed. I'd go with the suggested 15 for the DC.
I'd say, strength save or be knocked prone, the character is blinded while under the cloth, and it is difficult terrain. That is all assuming it is not being held down by anything, at which point I would make them restrained unless they succeed the save.

Well, you could have both the Dex and Str saves.

I'd treat it as a net.
